Cleaning A Dirty Air Conditioner Blower Motor In Burtonsville Maryland

Did you know that a dirty blower motor can decrease your systems efficiency and air flow? I had an estimate in Burtonsville Maryland right off of route 198 close to route 29 where the Bedding Barn is. The homeowner greeted me and explained that they were having an airflow problem. So we started to talk, and I started asking questions.

I found out that they had done some renovations and thought that maybe the air ducts had gotten squished. So I stuck a camera down the suspected bedrooms and saw that the branches were in tact. The homeowner then told me that they had adjusted the dampers downstairs to try and push the air upstairs. On our way to check the dampers I shut all the registers except for the ones in the bedrooms that had weak air flow.

Sometimes if you shut the registers downstairs it will force more air upstairs, so I shut all the registers except the ones that needed more air. I couldn't notice much of a difference, there was more that I needed to look at. So we proceeded to check the dampers.

They had dampers on the main trunk lines of the duct work. So I proceeded to close off the dampers and see if I could direct more air upstairs. After shutting all the dampers except for the upstairs feed, there was still little to no airflow. So I proceeded to inspect the components that would hamper airflow.

First I checked the blower motor setting and saw that it was indeed set on high. Most circuit boards have a high medium and low setting. Some people like to alternate the blower motor speeds. The lower speeds for heat in the winter and the higher speeds for air conditioning in the summer. The speed was set to high. When I looked further into the blower motor I saw the blades where compacted with something.

Blower motor blades are cupped so they can scoop the air. That cupping can get compacted with all sorts of debris. When I reached my finger inside the blower blades, I pulled out a thick chunk of matted black hair. I kind of chuckled when I looked over at the panting dog, who was sitting in the room. The blower motor was completely compacted with dog hair. The blower needed to be pulled and cleaned. When blower motors get that dirty, you really have to pull them out of the housing and give them a thorough cleaning. I also checked the evaporator coil, to see if it too was clogged up. The coil was fine, but the blower definitely needed some TLC.

After cleaning the blower motor the air flow was more than restored to it's former glory. It was cruising out of the register so hard that it was whistling. I had to explain to the homeowner that we now needed to set all the dampers back to their previous settings and open up some registers. After setting everything back the homeowner was more than pleased. The air flow was better than they could remember.

You should have seen the look on their face though when I took them upstairs originally. When I had all the air directed to their bedroom. The look was priceless. I'll remember that day in Burtonsville for a long time.
