Home Emergency Generators

When it comes to home emergency generators many people don't know how to choose the best one for their home needs. The good news is that it can be a lot easier than you might think to find one that will work for you and your family. It is important to first understand the different types of generators that are out there on the market today.

First, you will want to consider whether you just need a basic portable generator or if you want a big, heavy duty standby generator. Typically, portable ones can be kept in storage until needed. They tend to be a lot less expensive, but they also are not able to produce nearly as much power as a standby generator, nor for as long a time. And when the power does go out, you will need to get the portable generator out of storage and set it up.

A standby generator is one that is always hooked up and ready to take over if the power goes out. It is hooked up to your home and is set up to do frequent checks and self diagnostics so that it can take over immediately and will have your home's electrical power back up within minutes.

Next, it is important to consider what your generator will run on, in other words, its fuel source. Typically, there are different kinds of home emergency generators that run on different fuels. They can run on anything from gasoline to diesel and natural gas. Some also run on petroleum gas and now there are ones that can be run on solar power.

Another thing to consider when shopping for home emergency generators is how long it can run on the fuel. This will depend on the engine found in the generator. For long term power outages, it is best to have a standby generator hooked up to a natural gas line in your home, as these can essentially run for an unlimited amount of time. However, other home backup generators can run anywhere from 50 to 100 hours at a time.

There are hundreds of emergency home generators for you to choose from and your choice will mostly depends on how long you plan on needing to use your generator, although in most cases, you never know. This is why it is always best to have one permanently hooked up to your home through a natural gas line, if you can afford the overall price of the backup generator and the installation costs.

Overall, shopping for home generators for power outages can be confusing at first. However, once you understand the different types that are out there and the features that they have, it can be much easier to make a decision as to which home emergency generator you need for your family and household.
