Installing A New Dryer Vent In Potomac Maryland
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

This dryer vent install was in one of those older brick houses near Falls Rd. A lot of these homes were built in the 1940's and have had several additions added, especially in Potomac Maryland. This house was no exception and had an addition on each side. The original dryer vent had been extended through the crawlspace of the addition and was no longer working. This house was under contract and the vent had to be working for the house to close the sale.

Upon inspection I found that the dryer vent was made of the wrong material and had broken off years ago. I removed the vent cap and peeked through the hole. I could see that lint had been exhausted in the crawlspace for years. Not only had the original contractor taken shortcuts when installing the vent, they'd also created a huge fire hazard. I'm glad it was discovered and that I was there to fix it. So I proceeded to figure out how I was going to run this new vent with as little intrusion to the home. This vent run was going to be tricky.

When I went into the basement and looked through hole where the dryer vent was. I could see an old window that lead to the crawlspace. I needed to snake my steel dryer vent through that window. The problem was that every other contractor had used that window as well. There was plumbing and wiring all jammed through this little window and I barely had clearance to get through it. To make matters worse I was going to have to snake my dryer vent through there from the outside. This wasn't the first time I'd encountered something like this, so I knew exactly what to do.

I assembled some of my cleaning rods, and snaked them through the path that the vent was going to take. Since my cleaning rods are much thinner, than the dryer vent, I was able to still see through the vent hole while I snaked the path. I then put together the length of pipe outside and began using my cleaning rods to guide the new dryer vent. My trick worked like a charm. I was able to run the entire vent without having to cut any holes.

Since I had assembled the pipe outside and slipped it through the hole, it had screws and metal tape holding it together. The vent wasn't going to come apart in the crawlspace and was air tight. Not to mention it was now made of the correct material. Dryer vents should always be made of a heavy gauge steel, just like the sticker on the back of the dryer warns.
