Canuck Car Flags Invisible

As Canucks fans mull over the prospects of their team getting ousted in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, many are asking how can this happen to the President's Trophy winners?

The signs of a Canuck's impending implosion were evident in the last months of the regular season. Their power play had experienced an outage the likes of which hadn't happened in several years. Their scoring had dried up and the usual mantra of getting ready for low scoring playoff rounds was being bandied about two months prior to the end of the regular season.

The problem is that the team actually drank the kool-aid and believed this and now they find themselves in an untenable situation of trying to fix serious short-comings during the playoffs against an opponent who appears every bit the spoiler.

Clearly, the absence of former Hart Trophy winner, and team scoring leader, Daniel Sedin, is a factor, if not yet an excuse, for the Canucks. A Vancouver scribe went so far as to say that losing one half of the Sedin duo is very much like losing one and a half players, given the almost telekinetic bond between the two twins on the ice.

Los Angeles hadn't scored a short-handed playoff round goal since the 1990s so to surrender 2 in one game, to the same player, is indeed ominous for the once favoured Canucks. It should also be noted that Vancouver has never come back to win a playoff series when faced with a starting 2 game deficit.

Hockey pundits are scratching their collective heads too as many are now wishing they could take back their predictions of a Vancouver Pittsburgh final. Another less obvious sign of the Canucks potential early exit is the lack of car flags in Vancouver and around the Lower Mainland.

At this same time last year, my unscientific count of car flags in the first round approximated 10% of the driving population proudly flying the Green and Blue. Before the disastrous Game 2, I barely saw 2 car flags in my usual parking lot of over 300 cars.

Discounting the riot-types, most Canuck fans did approach these playoffs with a cautious optimism as many do realize how tough it is to repeat, not only winning the Cup, but just making the Final. That said, I don't think many gave LA this good an opportunity to send the Nucks packing so soon.

I'm very concerned that a different flag may be flying here in B.C. soon if the Nucks don't muster a lot of character and grit quickly. I hope not to see Roger's white towels of surrender too soon into this, the Second Season.
