Fleury Flower Power

Marc Andre Fleury has been a power force in the net for the last ten years for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He made his debut in October 2003. He was the youngest goalie in the league. He was rookie of the month his first month he played. Fleury is from Canada and got his start with Cape Breton Scraming Eagles, where he played three years and then drafted first in the 2003 NHL draft. Fluery played two world championships with team Canada and won 2 silver medals.

In the 03-04 season he started well, he got his first NHL shutout vs Chicago. However, the team started to decline after playing pour defense and their shots they gave up per game was over 30. Fleury still then shared time with two other goalies Jean-Sabastien Aubin and Sebastien Caron. In 05-06 Fleury played on and off as he played some in the minors while there was a labor dispute. He was then called up after an injury to Jocelyn Thibault and competed for time with Sebastien Caron and Jocelyn Thibault, Fleury won the starting job.

Fleury was then the starter from 06-07. He signed a 2.59 million dollar deal. The stats for Fleury improved with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin playing. He had 40 wins on the season and joined Tom Barrasso as the only Penguins goalie to do this. He got his first Playoff win against Ottawa. In 07-08 Fleury suffered an injury for about 3 months. When he returned he then lead the team to win the Atlantic Division and to a playoff run, which brought them to the Stanley Cup Finals. They ended up losing but Fleury had one of his best games in game five stopping 55 of 58 shots in a triple overtime win. This was the year he changed his yellow goalie leg pads and glove and blocker to plain white reebok leg pads and reebok goalie glove and blocker and kept his bauer hockey goalie helmet.

In 08-09 was the big year he went 35-18-7 as the penguins went to and won the Stanley Cup Finals. Fluery was spectacular as he made a diving stop with 1.5 seconds to win the game against Detroit. In 09-10 his record was 37-21-6 but the Penguins lost in the second round to Montreal. In 2010-11 he finished 36-20-5, but with many injuries the Penguins lost in the first round of the playoffs to Tampa. In 2011-12 he finished the season with 42 wins, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to Philadelphia.

So far in 2013 Fleury is having an outstanding season. He got his 23rd shutout, which gave him the shutout record for the Penguins.
