Lundqvist A Lock for Vezina Thus Far

Who leads this seasons candidates for the NHL's award of the vezina trophy? The one name that stands out more than any other is New Yorks Rangers goaltender, Henrik Lundqist. Lundqvist, competing in his 7th full year in the NHL currently leads all NHL goaltenders in several statistical categories. His amazing .941 save percentage is a stat that has rarely been witnessed at such a high level and his league leading 7 shutouts have not been easy tasks to accomplish. Lundqvist is having the best season of his NHL career and a huge thanks of it is due to a smaller work load thanks to his team mate and back up goaltender, Marty Biron. Prior to this season, Lundqvist would normally be called upon in about 70 games a year. This season he will likely finish around 60 games.

King Henry has been in the spotlight this entire season, especially due to HBO's filming of the hit series 24/7, which broadcasted the weeks that led up to the NHL's winter classic. This out door game draws attention from fans right across North America and has grown to be one of the highlights of each of the past NHL seasons. For Henrik to be able to cope with the extra pressures of camera's following him around even more this year due to the fliming of the series, and be able to step up his game and put forth a career best 1.77 goals against average thus far, speaks high leverage of his capabilities.

Lundqvist has been the backbone for the New York Rangers all season long and despite the Rangers only scoring 158 goals for, which is second lowest in the Eastern Division teams that are in a playoff spot, the Rangers are sitting comfortably in the number 1 spot with a goals for/against differential of +44, The divisions 2nd best and ranks for the leagues 3rd best. With a low production of goals for and to still be ranked in these high categories speaks a strong reflection of solid goaltending with the organization.

The Rangers along side Henrik Lundqvist have a great opportunity ahead of them if King Henry keeps up his pace. Impressively, in Lundqvist's past 22 games, 12 of them he has managed to hold the opposing team to two goals or less. If Henrik Lundqvist maintains these numbers for the remainder of this seasons duration, He will be the top candidate and likely recipient of the 2012 NHL Vezina Trophy, NHL's top goaltender.
