Washington Capitals Fire Bruce Boudreau, Ailing Canes Make Coaching Changes As Well

Bruce Boudreau has the designation of being the coach who got his team to two hundred wins faster than any other in the history of the modern NHL. His team features big name players, including Alexander Ovechkin, the electric player who has shown some dazzling skills on the ice as well as an amazing sense of humor during the All Star weekends. But, even with all of the star power at his disposal, Boudreau has often been criticized for one glaring problem: his team has never fared very well in the playoffs, bowing out in the early rounds.

The Washington Capitals started the new season strong, with a 7-0 record but have fallen apart lately, dropping six of their last games. The worst of those defeats came on this past weekend when the Capitals lost 5-1 to an injury riddled Buffalo Sabres. By all accounts, that game should have been an easy win for the talent laden Capitals and was likely the final nail in Boudreau's coaching coffin.

Capitals' General Manager George McPhee told the press that it was nothing to do with any one individual player but merely the apparent fact that the players were no longer listening to their vocal coach. His regular season record (201-88-40) was top notch, but the team just could not keep the pedal down for the playoffs.

Ovechkin, considered by many to be more technically gifted than Sidney Crosby has been falling off in the scoring department in the last few seasons and has not been held accountable or the team's losses. Boudreau announced a new system for the start of the season, saying that he was not going to hesitate to bench the top line guys, even Ovechkin if need be.

New coach Dale Hunter has never been a coach at any level but is bringing years of experience as a player. His is one of only four Capital jersey numbers that has retired and he served as captain of the team. Hunter, described by many as a tough guy to play against, is the only player in the NHL's history to have both 1000 points and 3000 penalty minutes. Hunter will make his coaching debut on Tuesday when the team faces the St. Louis Blues. The Capital's assistant coaches, Dean Evason, Bob Woods and Blaine Forsythe will keep their jobs for now.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Hurricanes have gone from winning the Stanley Cup in 2006 to being last in the Eastern Conference. Coach Paul Maurice has been fired and replaced with Kirk Muller.
