Holiday Myths Do Have A Kernel Of Truth To Them: What\'s Real And Not so Real?

Some myths about the holidays are always brought out, spoken as if they were set in stone and proven by science. Typically, they start getting mentioned in mid to late October and reach fever pitch as the year draws to a close. But, there is a reason that we continue to repeat these myths year after year- while they are not completely and totally true, most of these time worn tales do have a kernel of truth in them. From holiday weight gain to dangerous travel, do you know the difference between sort of true and not quite accurate?

When you factor in the timeline for the holidays as meaning the period before Thanksgiving and ending on New Year's Day, it is easy to understand how many people are convinced that they do gain a "ton" of weight in the holiday season. But, according to most weight related studies, the actual amount gained during this time period is far less than what the average person is thinking it is. In other words, gaining a ton of weight is not caused by just the holidays but rather from how you eat for the entire year. For a person who is at or near an average weight is likely to gain between one to two pounds during the holiday season- but should be able to shake that weight with little real effort one the holidays are over. On the other hand, people who are already overweight or obese are likely to gain far more weight, an average of five pounds to be exact. That is five pounds in addition to weight they are gaining during non holiday months, adding up to a major weight problem.

Another persistent holiday myth relates to suicides. Ever since Jimmy Stewart stood staring at the gloomy water, contemplating his final leap, the myth that the holidays are a hot time for increased suicides has cropped up. But, according to researchers who have studied nearly forty years of accumulated data, there is no real spike in suicide numbers in the weeks before, during or after the holiday season.

Finally, people fear driving on New Year's Eve saying that it is the most dangerous day of the year, but according to the Institute for Highway Safety, New Year's Eve ranks number seven on the list of dangerous days to drive. Number one? Strangely enough, the actual most dangerous day to drive our nation's highways is the Fourth of July. New Year's Eve is not going to be your day if you like to stroll after a few snorts of alcohol, however. That is the day that has the most alcohol related, pedestrian fatalities of the entire year.
