Not so Political Halloween Costumes: Children And Pets

This time of year brings back many memories of my older brother, myself and our dog, Dusty. We had gotten our cowboy outfits for our birthdays and became the baddest, meanest, toughest ole cusses of the wild wild West.

We even had our six shooters ready at a moments notice to shoot anyone that got in our way. We raised a ruckus in our neck of the woods and no sheriff (our dog, Dusty) was going to spoil our fun. Our bandit gang of two would stalk the nether regions of the territory looking for mischief and debauchery.

I don't know how many times we got punished for the 'fun' we had as kids, but it didn't deter my brother and I from stalking unsuspecting motorized carriages carrying 'gold' that meandered our way. Our socks filled with sand became our bullets as we tried to stop the shipment of gold from reaching its destination.

As the gold shipment passed on its way to town, my brother and I would propel our 'bullets' towards the target. My brother launched his sock-filled bullet perfectly! It pierced the passenger side window and spread sand all over the inside of the neighbors carriage.

The motorized carriage stopped so suddenly, all my brother and I could do was stand there with our mouths gaping open. The murderous scream from the inside of the car told us we needed to get the heck out of there.

Needless to say our bandit days were done. Our pistols were confiscated as well as our neckerchief masks. No more cowboy hats, either. Our bandit gang of two had been disbanded. We spent time in 'jail'. It was to be months before we ever saw our cowboy outfits again.

Halloween afternoon came and to our delight, our mom brought out our cowboy outfits. She announced that we were going trick-or-treating as a gang of five. Wait? Even as little as I was, I knew there was only four in our little family. There was dad, mom, my older brother and me. Who was the fifth member of our Halloween gang?

You guessed it, the fifth member of our gang was our dog, Dusty. We got all dressed up in our cowboy outfits. I can remember my dad wearing his real Smith and Wesson on his hip. Can't remember any bullets being brought along, though. The chaps and cowboy boots were as real as it gets. Even my mom got a dressed up as a cowgirl. Our little gang of five, with masks drawn up over our faces headed on out to rob and plunder the neighborhood of all their 'gold'.

Just a few memorable thoughts from this ole cowboy to celebrate Halloween.

Thanks, Sister Kaite. I appreciate it. We didn't have horses until I was 10. Learned to ride at my grandfather's ranch, when I was 5. I love the memories. I must be getting sentimental
