What We Dread About the Holidays: The Answer Might Shock You

The holiday season comes and impacts every family and individual differently. For some, the season starts with Halloween and culminates with New Year's Day celebrations. For others, the holidays are a more sedate time for quiet reflection and religious rituals. But, nearly everybody has at least one thing that bothers them about the holidays, something that they dread more than anything else in the world. And, those dreads can leave them feeling depressed and sadder at the time of the holidays than they would at any other time of the year. The most common dreads might be shocking but the increased risk of depression might have a very logical explanation.

Consumer Reports performed a study related to the strange things that people dread about the holiday season. Number one on the list, cited by nearly seventy percent of the people that responded to the study, were the huge crowds and long lines at malls, specialty stores and other retailers. Others feared gaining weight thanks to all of the rich holiday foods, the overabundance of treats and the lack of time to stick to an effective fitness routine.

According to health and fitness experts, many people blow off their diet and workouts during the months of November and December, planning to set weight loss as their New Year's resolution but, those have been proven to be ineffective in the long run.

Another source of great concern is the worry of going into debt. Nearly forty percent of the people in the Consumer Reports survey worried that they would face mounting debts when the holiday season ended. With more and more people living paycheck to paycheck, Christmas gifts might be a strain on an already overstretched budget that the family cannot actually handle. A bright spot, this holiday season though: unemployment is at one of its lowest rates in the last two and a half years.

Other things mentioned on the list were to be expected and included things like decorating, cleaning the house and hosting holiday parties, but the most shocking was number ten. Just over fifteen percent of the respondents said that they dreaded having to be nice to other people during the holiday seasons and faking all of the smiles when dealing with those people.

Seasonal affective disorder, which is caused by the diminishing amounts of sunlight during the winter months is common and may make holiday depression more severe. Nearly ten percent of the adult population in the US is estimated to be affected by SAD.
