A German Shepherd is A Great Pet to Have

Finding the perfect dog for your family can be a big decision. Many families will choose the same breed of dog they had as a child, while others will choose a totally different breed. A German Shepherd is becoming a very popular breed that many families are choosing because of their superior intelligence, protectiveness and loyalty. They become a very positive addition to your family as they are an affectionate and loving breed of dog and because of their intelligence, are easy to train.

Many people mistakenly think of a German Shepherd as an attack dog, because of their excellent skills as police dogs and because of their work in the military. They are also used as a seeing eye dog, in search and rescue, and as helpers for the disabled. They were trained for these jobs, because of their eagerness to learn and they are easy to train, not because they are mean or good attack dogs by nature. If you choose to add a German Shepherd to your family you will have a very caring pet that will be a playmate and a watchdog your family. They have a willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of their family. I find the GSD breed to be very brave and they wouldn't think twice about giving their life for their family. They have a very strong protective instinct and are very loyal to the ones they love.

If you get a German Shepherd as a puppy the bond between the Shepherd and his family will only grow as time goes by. You will be considered his family! Although it's not always possible, it's great if your German Shepherd has lots of room to exercise. If the room isn't available, its important that your Shepherd gets plenty of exercise on a daily basis. They are a breed of dog with lots of energy.

Here are a couple of things to consider when choosing a German Shepherd as a family pet.

  1. German Shepherds do shed 365 days a year. Most breeds do a bulk of their shedding twice a year (and minimal shedding for the rest of the year), for three weeks in the spring when they switch from their winter coat to their summer coat and in the fall as their summer coat switches back to their winter coat.

  2. German Shepherds can be large dogs when they reach their full size. A male can weigh 75-100 pounds and stand 24-26 inches at the shoulder. A female can weigh 60-80 pounds and stand 22-24 inches at the shoulder.

  3. A German Shepherd is a highly intelligent dog and they need interaction. A German shepherd who is bored will find ways to entertain himself and it could be in ways you don't like! It's important that they have toys that they know are ok to play with and have daily interaction with their family.

If you treat your German shepherd with love and affection and not harshly you will have a healthy and happy companion for your family! They will love you with all their heart every day of their life, never judging or talking back!
