Home Made Laundry Detergent

So we have all this hype about the home made laundry detergent but let's look at some facts! I want to discuss the reasons why anyone would want to do this and then shed some light on a very important concept. So buckle your seat belts while we bring a little reality to the subject.

Reasons why someone would want to make home made laundry detergent:

One: To save money! Ok this is a valid reason. Who doesn't want to save money, right? This can be done by making your own soap.

Two: To be able to know what is in your soap. Many soaps on the market have all sorts of things in them and not much in place to regulate this. So great reason!

Three: To avoid any issues with allergies related to soap use. Good one. Many people have problems using store bought soaps and typically the "do it yourself" versions are usually pretty safe.

Four: To feel like a cast on "Little House On The Prairie". All right this one may be throwing you a bit but if you can't tell, we are transitioning into the reality portion of making home made laundry detergent!

It Is Not Easy or Convenient! All these articles and blogs and facebook post's making claims of how fabulous it is and not a bit of it is true. That is unless you truly do want to revert back to the "Little House On The Prairie". Take it from someone who makes their own soap. I do it. I admit it. It is true. But that is how I know the truth. I own a laundry business and we make our own soap, because it is a great way to save money and we use a lot of soap so to an extent, it is convenient. But unless you do thousands of pounds of clothes every month then this is not the option for you! Let me tell you why.

So before you decide to make home made laundry detergent, consider the following:

You have to put a bar of soap through a cheese grater. Then you have to cook it. IT IS SOAP, so odds are that when you add water and heat you get bubbles that expand quickly if the temperature is too high which equals a bubbling mess all over your stove. That means extra clean up time! Intrigued yet? Here's more.

Get a big old five gallon bucket and fill it with hot water. Now it is stirring time. Mix all the ingredients and add the melted bar of soap. Put a lid on it! (Take it easy, I mean literally cover the bucket with a lid.) Let it sit for more than twelve hours! Then when you open it you get this wonderful jelly like goop! More mixing! Yeah! Now you have home made laundry detergent! GUESS AGAIN! Not done yet.

Now you have to get one of your old detergent bottles and wash it out really good. Then fill the bottle half full with the soap you made and the fill the rest of the bottle with hot water. Give it a good shake to make sure it is mixed well and then open it! OOOPS, another mess created as the container erupts into a foaming mess! (Sorry I had to do it.) Time to clean again. This is fun huh? All to save some money.

Now take a breath. I get it, you want convenience, you want to save money, and know what is in your soap. But you don't have to make it to get it. There are people that make that exact soap and are willing to bring it to you. Will it cost you more than making it yourself? Maybe, but the time and hassle savings may make up for it and it will still be a lot cheaper than buying at a store. Open your browser, go to Google and search for "home made laundry detergent delivery" and who knows, maybe you will get lucky enough to find someone who will take care of you. If not, weigh your options and determine if it is worth your while. Best of luck to ya!
