The Day I Got My License

Driving is consider a rite of passage from being a child to being an adult. It's considered the ultimate freedom to be able to finally get behind the wheel of a car and cruise the open road with the windows down and the music on full blast. I longed for that day to finally come, but of course, I needed to learn how to operate a car properly so I could get my license.

Once I passed the test to get my learner's permit, I eagerly got behind the wheel with my dad in an empty parking lot to learn how to drive. It was exciting to get behind the wheel and make the car move solely because of my actions. Little by little I got better at it. I got comfortable parking the car, backing out, making turns, you know, stuff like that. I got yelled at a few times for not using my signal on the turns, but I figured, eh I'll do it when I'm actually on the road.

I finally got a chance to take the driver's license test at the dreaded DMV a little bit after I turned 16, and I could not be more excited. The driving instructor came out and stepped into the car, and man was he a scary looking guy. I got yelled at right away for forgetting to put on my seat belt. Little did I know that this would end up being the hardest yet best lesson of my driving career (if you can call it that).

I drove and got nervous because he was really intimidating and was frantically scribbling who knows what on his note pad thing. I did my best to scan everything and use my signals whenever I had to make a turn. I made sure to follow the speed limit and gently break at every red light. Then came the dreaded moment that I feared- I had to pull over on the side, and then go in reverse.

I hadn't practiced this part with my dad because he had forgotten to teach me. I was so scared because I knew how to reverse out of a parking space, but not how to do it on the road. When you go in reverse, everything is backwards which made it confusing for me as a newbie driver. I took a deep breath and managed to reverse successfully, and then he finally told me to drive back to the DMV.

The instructor, with the most serious, unfriendly look on his face, looked at me sternly and told me I had to have been the worst driver he's ever passed. I literally was one point away from not passing, and gave me a lecture on how driving is a huge responsibility and that I need more practice blah blah blah etc. I followed each statement with a yes sir, of course sir, and then I got my license!

I'll never forget that day because of the wide range of emotions I went through to finally get my license, which to me was a pass to freedom. I really had to work for it, but it was totally worth it and I've loved driving ever since.

Then I'm still a youngster since I havn't passed my test yet :). It costs a lot over here and it is hard to pass bothe written exams and the 2 times you have to drive up. Common cost over here to pass your license is around 2000 - 2500 us dollars, I know people that has paid more that that. Congratulations on passing :).
