The Five Senses

As I grow older, there are a lot of sleepless nights, where you lie in bed and think, remembering things, planing things. Last night was one of those nights and I hear a train whistle cutting through the quiet. That brought me a memory of my father. He worked on the railroad all during my childhood. When I hear a train Whistle I feel like my dad is communicating with me. "Hi Dad".

One of the things I thought about was if I had to give up one of the Five senses, which one of the senses would I be able to live with out. Would it be SIGHT,or HEARING, or TOUCH or SPEECH or SMELL? Let me see...maybe I could give up hearing, but the more I thought about it the more I realized I would never be able to hear my husbands voice or those of my children. I would not be able to hear birds sing in the morning. All the songs, I would not hear, that bring good memories.I would not hear my husband and my favorite song when we were dating. All the memories a would loose of my mother singing as she cleaned the house or "I'll be down to get you in a taxi honey" dad sang when he was a little drunk..No I would not be willing to give up hearing .

What about the sense of smell? How important is it to smell things? Bad odors are to warn you of things unclean or unsanitory. This is to have a healthy invornment. Then there are smells that warn you of danger, like fire or smoke, this is very important too. The sense of smell brings memories of good things like my husbands after shave or good food or the air after it has rained. Alright I won't willingly give up smell either.

There is the sense of touch...How important is this sense? Could you do without this sense? Well the great feeling of a hug or kiss from my husband or children, or petting the dog or a cat.. is so soothing To touch or be touched by loved ones is so necessery ...no I can't give this up either.

Now comes the sense of speech. Anyone who knows me knows what a talker I am. I love to sing to communicate with family and friends, laugh. I don't think I would ,willingly give up speaking either.

That leaves the sense of sight. Would I be able to give up seeing my husbands face or those of my children? Never to see beautiful Idaho or the colors of the sunset? I could go on and on but the fact is no one would willingly give up any of these five senses. They are gifts from God to make our lives so much more joyful. We all need to thank Him for the senses every day.

Well I guess that's it for this time. See you soon?
