Being raised in a small town we didn't have a large variety of things for entertainment. Movies were my favorites. John Garfield, Humphrey Bogert, Lana Turner, Linda Darnell. They were bigger than life. I loved them all. When the movie started, the adventure began. The price of a movie was 15 cents They almost always had a double feature, with two cartoons and a news reel(Old). You could stay as long as you wanted. The movies ran continueous.

On Saturday they had a running serial...usually a super hero. The soft drinks were a nickel, popcorn a dime, candy a nickel and they had penny candy too. For 50 cents you were set for the whole afternoon. Of course this was before our town had television.

We would listen to the radio. I would run in and plop down in front of the radio to listen to my stories...captian america, the creaking door, the shadow, the lone ranger, etc. just as good as television is now.

In the summer time we went to the city pool. We could only go three days a week. We were all afraid of getting polio. That was before there were vaccines for all those things. When ever we came down with an illness mom would put us to bed. She did all the nursing. We never went to the real doctor unless we were half dead. A great remedy for what ever ailed you was an enema. You could not have a dirty stomach(Old Remedy).

When I was little, there was an old couple at the corner that sucked snuff. I would go visit them sometimes, and watch with great consentration, to see if they ever missed the coffee can when they spit. It was really amazing to watch...they never missed! Then there was an old cowboy who would sit on his porch and smoke. He could roll a cigarette with one hand, put it in his lips and never touch it again. He would smoke it down to a nub and then spit it out. I loved to watch how good he was at that.

We played kick the can at night, or until the lights can on. That was the time we went in for the night. My folks belonged to a club called the junior old timers, and they had a baseball team. When the team would travel, we would go too. We did not watch the games. We caught toads or Made shoes out of cans and clunked around on them.

I feel I am so lucky too have all these wonderful memories growing up. Of course it did not take as much to entertain us then.

Well that's it for this time, see you soon?
