Today we are going to discuss washing machine detergent and answer some related questions. I own a laundry business in Tarrant County Texas so the following is based on two and a half years of washing experience and research. If there is anything that we have missed please add to our comments below! Let's jump right in.
Should I use powder or liquid washing machine detergent?
Lets discuss the powder version first. It has been around for ages, long before the liquid versions ever surfaced. It has proven itself since the beginning and would have disappeared entirely if it wasn't still affective. So it at least bares considering. The liquid counterpart came along and has managed to stick around for a long time as well so obviously it holds it's own in the detergent world as well. So which one is better?
Here is the catch.... neither is better than the other. It comes down to preference and circumstance. For instance:
If you have low water pressure or you are using cold water only to wash with, then liquid may be your choice because it is considered to be a dissolved solution already which makes it better for the above circumstances.
Powder has bleaching agents in them that will help with whites but can be harmful for your colors. The bleaching agents will help with preventing black mold and bacteria too.
The main thing is to look at your situation and make the decision that is right for you! If it were me, I would go with the liquid.
Should I put the washing machine detergent in a dispenser or straight in the drum?
In this case, circumstance again comes into play. If you are using an older style washer, then you may want to put it in a dispenser or even better, run the water and pour your detergent in before putting the clothes into the washer. If you are using a newer style washer, then odds are that it doesn't really affect it either way. Just be careful when putting the detergent over the top of the clothes because it can cause streaks on them and prevent proper washing.
I hope this information gives you a good starting point when choosing or using a washing machine detergent. Remember to look at your circumstances and you will typically find a solution that is just right for you. Please leave you comments and tips so that we all can continue to learn!
