What Kind Of Chicken Coop Designs Should You Get

If you are just thinking about the possibility of keeping or rearing chickens then you will need to consider carefully what kind of accommodation you are going to provide. There are any number of chicken coop designs to pick from and your choice will largely be dictated by the number of chickens you want to rear and by the amount of outside space you have available to you.

But to start with you need to know that ready made chicken coops are basically constructed from two types of material: wood or plastic. Wooden coops are made from untreated wood so you can rest assured that your chicken home is a safe environment for your birds to live in. Coops made from plastic are equally as safe and are commonly called Eglus because they resemble the shape and appearance of igloos. This is an amusing play on words.

Wooden chicken coop designs are certainly the most popular at the moment with Eglus being a relatively new concept. The Eglu however has many advantages if you have a small backyard or live in a city environment and would even allow you to keep chickens if your only outside space was a small roof terrace or balcony, although you would have to consider how your neighbours might feel about that. However, unlike wooden coops which can be pretty much any size and shape and can house different size of flocks, the Eglu will restrict you to keeping a few chickens and is perhaps more suited to the hobby farmer or someone who wants chickens as pets.

On the positive side you don’t have to worry about predators if you opt for an Eglu as the manufacturers claim that they are predator proof and you certainly can’t say that about most wooden structures. Chicken rearers spend a lot of time and money in keeping their flocks safe, so solving this issue is a great advantage. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you don’t have to worry about predators if you live in the city. Foxes are not afraid to wander into a backyard at night looking for a tasty meal. However, most chicken coop designs have these features built into them so if you are building your own coop you don't have to worry too much.

In the wooden coop range you can choose from portable coops, commonly known as chicken tractors, which are also very useful if you have limited space, or you can go for a more permanent coop or shed which would enable you to keep more chickens. If you are looking to rear chickens on a commercial basis, then the larger more permanent structures will be a better option for you. Whatever your choice, make sure that you do plenty of research before you start and ideally get a hold of some good chicken coop designs. Keeping chickens can be fun and does not require a lot of hard work once you have your basic set up right, but it is still a big responsibility which should not be taken lightly.
