Where Is The Party For The Losing Team

On most any fall day during football season, in most any town, you will find a group of gladiators ranging in ages from five to fifteen, going through the final drills before game time. On the other end of the field, a group in the same age range is going through their final drills before game time. The first group must ensure their pads and helmets are in place. The second group must do some final rehearsals on that new cheer they invented. The parents, well, they are just parents out there to cheer each group to the winning circle.

Strange thing though, some parents in each group have invested a great deal of time and money to ensure their little person out shines all the others. The seriousness of some of the parents will lead a reasonable person to conclude, this is a game that their lives (not the kids) is dependent upon. There are many documented cases wherein parents have exceeded the boundaries of reasonableness. I immediately recall the cheer-leading incident between two parents, and the fisticuffs between a parent and a coach, because his son was not getting enough playing time.

To be very honest, I am rather perplexed in my position on some of the issues set forth herein. We often hear the word bullying, from all the information I have gleaned from the educated talking heads, bullying is a learned behavior. I had to confront myself with the possibility that competition maybe a precursor to violence. I do not believe it has to be, but when we teach our small kids such, in your face behavior, it must have a direct or in-direct affect. I have always been told, and I believe, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

One can hear the parents shouting from the sidelines such words or phrases as, kill him, stick it to him, knock his light out, etc. In a developing mind, such words must have some consequences. Fundamentally, this is similar to the method used by a teacher in the classroom when teaching a child how to read. We want the child to retain what is learned in the classroom, but disregard all the negative talk outside the classroom. Is that even possible?

I realize if the competitive spirit is shaken, it may have a deleterious affect on the minds of our youngsters.

This subject is much too complicated for me to understand, therefore, I am going to talk to one of those educated talking heads. Hopefully, I can be lead in the right direction. It is apparent to me that I worry much too much about things that I cannot change.

Wait, I did not discuss the subject of this article. Well, I will do that now. When the game is over, one team is praised as the winner, while the other team is branded a loser. Imagine that, a five year old is called a loser. Where is all the self-esteem stuff we should be conveying to the youngsters? The winning team is given all types of accolades, while the losing team feels very dejected. Five-year-old feeling dejected because of losing a game.

If this same kid continues to lose games, I can envision him at the age of fifteen and still losing and being called a loser. Where does he go now? Pick up a gun maybe.

As I implied earlier, I don’t have an answer to this one, but I do believe if we are serious about eradicating bullying and other negative factors, we must teach all our kids positive behavior. In my opinion, all kids who participate in sports should be declared winners until they reach high school. Please don’t ask me to comment on what I am talking about, because I would not know how to. My view is, something must be done. Educated talking heads, where are you?
