Why It\'s Vital to Teach Your Kids About Nature

Let's face it. We live in a world dominated by technology. In fact the very nature of kids nowadays is to spend hours on the computer, text friends, play video games, watching TV, and so on. The world has opened up to us and our children like never before, and with endless benefits due to our technological world. At the same time, the hours we spend in front of these advanced machines are stealing our time from the natural world around us. This can happen without us even noticing it.

The devastating affects of too much time sedentary in front of TV and computers include many health complications including childhood obesity a higher risk of psychological problems. The benefits of kids spending time with nature however are incredible.

Being outside, interacting with the earth and its curious creatures is invaluable. Positive affects include healthy, strong bodies, enhanced imaginations, and endless opportunities to learn and explore. Studies also show that kids are better able to interact with classmates, have decreased aggression, and boosted attention spans, and learn to respect the world around them.

That's why I find it even more important now, that we as parents truly instill and encourage awe for our dear planet and the fascinating world it holds for us. As parents, we have the responsibility and capabilities to do this. It is important to start at a very young age and develop and nurture their wonders of our world.

The endeavor to teach our kids about nature works best when both parents are actively involved. Young kids often get excited about what excites their parents and vise versa. You can become 100% involved in inspiring your children about nature no matter where you live. Even in big cities you'll encounter all sorts of creeping critters and beautiful growing things.

Go for walks and hikes regularly. Everyplace from city parks to national parks are great for this. This gets your kid moving and exploring. Encourage your child to stop and take a closer look at anything and everything that interests him along the way.

Explore your own back yard. Help your kids look for nature's hidden treasures they may never have noticed. Scavenger hunts are fun for this too. Whatever you can do to make the experience engaging and interesting. Camp out with a tent and have an adventure. Make the natural world right where you live a special place to be.

Take your vacations at national parks! This will open their eyes to whole worlds and environments they may never have seen or heard of before. These parks have numerous activities to do as families and offer beauty beyond comparison.

Have a fully loaded aquarium with fish and plants living together. This will teach your child about an entire ecosystem right within their own home. It's also a great tool to teach them the responsibility of caring for life and the habitat it lives in.

When you notice your child take a special interest in a specific kind of nature, like a favorite animal, really celebrate and encourage it. Buy books, toys, and the like to feed their passion. Take them to the zoo and get excited about what they particularly love.

By taking action everyday to get your kids out of the house and into nature you are giving them a most precious gift. You are imparting to them joy, stimulating curiosity, teaching them responsibility, sharing and gratitude. You give them a sense of accomplishment and teach them of the very special heritage we have to guard and care for our dear home. You are allowing your child enjoy the very nature of being a child, and to grow to be so much more.

Street Talk

Ally D, good article, our grand kids at a young age, due to both parents being in the game, are computer boffin s (aged 6 and 4), but there is no TV in the house, one day a week is set aside and called eco night, where cold showers and simple food is eaten followed by games outside involving the whole family (us as well if there) These game are designed to stimulate the mind about nature. The kids have their own veggie garden where they are expected to look after (obviously with help) the plants. Holidays are always in the Game Reserve and the 6 year old is a fantastic photographer already. There sport is on bicycles and must play outside in the fresh air. They are being brought up the right way. I love this sort of encouragement the your article gives keep at it.

Great article. The kids spend way to much time in front of the TV or on a computer. No wonder they are obese and lazy. They need to get and enjoy the nature that surrounds.
