Getting Started As A Tutor

Tutoring is a business which offers a lot of flexibility in work hours and location. Depending on what is convenient for the tutor, the tutoring sessions can be held online, in the tutor’s home, in the student’s home or in a public place like the local public library, or even a coffee shop.

Usually the biggest obstacle to overcome for a new tutor just starting out is how to get the first clients. How do you get your first students so that you have some testimonials for your new tutoring business? Well, there are a number of things that you can try.

Flyers are often a good way to advertise your tutoring services. Flyers can be delivered to homes in the neighborhood, they can be placed in strategic locations such as schools, local convenience stores, library public display boards, or anywhere else that it is allowed. Some high schools keep a tutor list in their office to give out to parents. All you need to do is phone the high schools and ask to put your name on their tutor list. If there are further requirements, such as proof of education, they will let you know.

The internet offers other ways to advertise, such as free online classifieds, putting up your own website, or business directories. You could also become a member of a forum about tutoring and advertise your services there.

Will you want to tutor privately or as part of a larger tutoring company? Private tutors enjoy the most freedom in their profession because they make all the decisions themselves as to how much to charge, what hours to work, etc. They also keep all the money they earn. Job flexibility is the biggest advantage to being a private tutor. The disadvantage is that you must do all your own advertising and all your own fee collecting.

Working for a tutoring company has its advantages. They are usually well-known and spend money on advertising which benefits you. They collect the fees for you and they give you students. A disadvantage is that they skim their fees off of the top of yours. They also may decide how much you will charge for tutoring and how many hours to work each week, and even which hours to work.

Tutoring makes good money compared to other jobs, and especially other stay at home jobs. A tutor can make between $20 and $75 per hour. This is usually the gross amount before expenses are taken off. The expenses are usually lower for private tutors, and can even amount to nothing if the tutor chooses to tutor at home. Online tutors going through a tutoring agency must pay agency fees.

The goal of many tutors just starting out is to secure a part-time tutor job which will supplement their income. As the tutoring business grows, the next step is to use full-time tutoring to replace the tutor's day job. How long this will take totally depends on a number of factors. It is generally not recommended to quit the day job, which usually pays bills and rent, until an adequate number of regular tutoring students has been retained.

As a tutor, your reputation follows you around. A great tutor with a great reputation will never have a shortage of clients. Word gets spread around from happy students and happy parents to other students and parents. This is by far the best way to grow a tutoring business. The same process is true for a bad tutoring reputation, so care must be taken to always do a good job and make sure clients are happy and successful.
