When embarking on a venture to establish a business of your own creation, the ultimate goal must be more than the pursuit of a pile of money. At the heart of each great venture should be a desire to make a difference in others lives. To somehow become a pillar of the community and become a respected member of society whether it be in a back woods hollow or in the middle of the largest commercial center in the world.
Our goals should not be about building a large bank account, accumulating massive real estate holdings or even a vast portfolio of stocks and bonds but in some small way to guaranteed our legacy for future generations. Our descendants (the wee little ones you are raising to maturity and their wee ones, etc., etc.) will be much more supportive of our efforts if we allow them to have a part in this venture that will afford them all the luxuries life has to afford (at least that is what we hope). There is a sense of accomplishment like no other when you share a building experience with your children and/or significant other. Building your business can actually help also build closer familial bonds.
They are the ones that can carry on your good name as they build that online presence to the multi-national corporation you have planned. Besides, what good would amassing a huge bank account, vast real estate holdings and a bountiful portfolio do you if not to leave them for your loved ones to fight over when you have parted this moral realm? A fine goal to be sure.
When do you realize when you have made a difference? Sometimes it is as simple as a comment thanking you for providing much needed knowledge, service or the opportunity to explore a new skill you are providing through your business. One of the most gratifying experiences I have had was when I published an article here on StreetArticles and a high school friend on Facebook related a story about how he had come into my dad's clock repair shop and how my dad had fixed an heirloom watch for him after he helped my dad move some equipment around for him. I didn't know anything about this and I wondered how many other lives we touch with a blog post, article or exchange on a forum.
It is times like these that I know beyond making living, touching other lives is the real reward. It is connecting with others that makes it all worthwhile.
