A well-designed home office will go a long way to grow your home business. Invest a small amount of money on good furniture and fixtures, as this will be paid back many times over in the long term. If your budget does not allow for new furniture check your local newspaper or your phone book for used furniture stores and also check out charity shops for some used furniture bargains. Make sure you select items for your office that are safe and in good condition.
Now you will want to get started on your business. Your office space should be able to include your computer screen and keyboard, your phone and still have enough space for you to write and stretch around. Have sufficient space to allow you to stack completed paper work every day as this is essential to help you stay focused. The chair should be of high quality and have a good back and neck support and the seat cushion must be large enough and padded well.
Storage
Choose a wall cabinet that suits your space and archiving requirements. Vertical wall space cabinets possibly could be good for space. Side cabinets are wider, but not as deep as vertical cabinets and they also contain drawers. Even if you do not have the space, perhaps you should consider buying a folding table you can use when you need it and then put it neatly away when you are finished. The storage area is also very important to maintain completed projects, business expenses, files and everything that builds during the operation of your home office.
Office Equipment
The next important point to consider is your choice of equipment. A high spec computer, printer, fax and scanner. Your requirements should determine what type of computer you purchase. If you spend a lot of time travelling a laptop or a netbook would be a better option. If you choose a laptop, you should choose one with a docking station, so that when you are at home, it will connect to your keyboard, mouse and monitor.
Choosing a Printers
The two types of printers you should consider are an inkjet printer and laser printer. Inkjets use cartridges and laser printers use a toner cartridge and drum. Determine what your printing needs are before buying, because there is a difference between the two. If you are planning a large quantity of printed materials, you should choose a laser printer. Laser printed copies also produce a text of higher quality than many ink jet printers. Laser printers are also faster than inkjets, but inkjets are cheaper if you need colour in your printed documents. Colour laser printers are still more expensive so maybe you should consider buying one of each, which will allow all your printing needs with the best savings.
Telephones
Have a good separate phone line to work from home. The phone is the most important form of communication between you and your clients or customers. Most phone systems offer good features with programmable speed dials, allowing multiple lines, option speaker and conference call options. You can also choose to add caller display and voice mail options.
