The Other Side Of The Coin - Supporting The Home Based Business

What happens when it is not you that is trying to get a home based business going but your spouse, partner, number one son, live-in maid? Ah, now you're talking the role I have played for many, many years. It is incumbent upon you to be the cheer leader, the "that's all right honey, we can live off my money, your money will be for the extra things" rah rah person. Your role in this menagerie will be to support the other one through what could be the most harrowing times of your life.

You see, at first its more or less a hobby with grand aspirations. Later, after many, many dollars have been outlaid for "necessities" (funny how a complete wardrobe is now a "business" expense and not just extravagant spending) your money that is getting the bills paid and keeping the kids in clothes, food and shelter is now ripe for the picking since that contract they just knew they were going to get fell through (blame it on the economy, Lord knows it couldn't be your fault. I mean Prada handbags and Versace eyewear had nothing to do with it at all).

Pretty soon they are suggesting playing loose with the mortgage (or rent) payment and the car payments but soon your patience wears thin. It is very tiresome dodging the bill collectors but not just for household bills and God forbid your partner should actually hire anyone to help in their business venture. Nothing like having a disgruntled employee screaming at the top of their lungs in your front yard because they haven't been paid. Not a pretty site to drive up to after a hard day at the office and a one and a half our commute home I can tell you.

Now is when you will find out just how supportive you can be. Trust me when money is not an issue you can be the most supportive spouse but your mortgage payment is 3 months behind and foreclosure notices are being taped to your door, your perspective changes very quickly. Sometimes you get lucky and because of the business losses you get a major windfall from the IRS (actually happened, $8,000 in refund, $8,000 to the mortgage company to keep the house). Easy come, easy go as they say. At this point you will want to make a few adjustments. First, no major purchases without both parties in agreement. Might cut down on those "necessary" trips to the day spa to "decompress" from the stress of running ones own business. Fights will ensue and you will be called everything but human. Having a passive nature at this point will not serve you well.

So, now the pressure has hit a fever pitch and your ready to throw in the towel. For the business? No, this is when good marriages start to form cracks in the foundation. From the home based business perspective this enough to drive you to your "special place" where everything is wonderful and pretty music plays in the background. Families are torn apart in these situations because this is not a business you can walk away from and leave over the weekend. This home based business is all around you 24/7 and you are constantly reminded of its existence every time you walk past "the office" or other designated area for the venture. What started out as such a promising occupation to keep the other one busy has now taken over your life and threatens your very happiness at every turn.

So, what do you do in this situation? You offer your undying support and hope that they will be willing to ask for help before it is really too late. Unfortunately this can turn into a very bad situation as well (I can't tell you how many times I was left to prepare a major mailing after a day at work while they went out or off to bed to sleep). So, set some boundaries and assist them but do not take on more responsibility than you can afford. Nothing spells disaster more than when the main bread winner is out of yeast (can't make it to work because of being supportive). Sometimes it is just best to leave them to it and go do what makes you happy until they are ready to discuss the state of affairs in a constructive manner.

You can call it their business if you want to but when it is in your home it is everyones business and if the business goes down you go down with it just the same as your partner who is probably not all that loving at this point because you will notice their personality will ebb and flow as the business does better or worse. Trying times even for the most dedicated partner.
