Home Brewing Starter Kits – How to Choose A Kit That is Right for You

If you've never brewed your own beer at home but would love to give it a try, there are many home brewing starter kits that will help you ease into the world of home brewing. These kits range from basic to advanced. Starting out with a kit will give you a feel for the brewing process and will also help you determine if home brewing is a hobby you would like to pursue further. Home brewing starter kits start out at about thirty-five dollars and go up to two hundred dollars or more. So, if you decide brewing isn’t for you, the investment is minimal. You really can't lose!

What items are included in a home brewing kit?

Home brewing starter kits include everything you need to make a batch of beer which usually ranges from two-six gallons depending on the kit. In a typical kit, you will get a fermenter, hopped malt extract, brewing yeast, sanitizer, bottles, caps, labels, and instructions. One thing you will need to purchase, if you don’t already have one, is a large stainless steel kettle. Brewing experts highly recommend a stainless steel brew kettle over aluminum.

What is the difference between the lower cost kits and the more expensive kits?

The less expensive kits contain everything you need to brew a batch of beer. However, the more expensive home brewing starter kits may include extra items such as a glass carboy (instead of a plastic bucket found in less expensive kits), a bottling bucket, a bottle filler, a fermentation thermometer, a hydrometer, a capper, an airlock, and a fill kit. These extra items are not absolutely necessary to brew a batch of home brew. However, having them will help you produce a better quality of beer. If your budget allows, I recommend purchasing a more expensive kit.

How long does it take to make a batch of home brew using a kit?

Home brewing starter kits produce a batch of beer in as little as fourteen days. Depending on the kit, and the type of beer you are making, this time will vary and could take up to three weeks. Don’t worry. It will definitely be worth the wait!

Home brewing starter kits are the perfect way to try home brewing without breaking the bank. With a little practice, patience, and persistence, you will be ready for more advanced home brew techniques and will soon be tweaking recipes or creating your own.
