Have you ever made your own beer at home? I am just getting into the hobby (way of life) and I've found that it seems a lot less complicated than I thought it would be.
In looking for a home brewing kit for beginners I've found out something. A lot of the equipment needed to brew my first batch of beer I already have in my kitchen. The rest will come from the home brewing kit that I have, and of course I already have my thirst for drinking the finished product already.
5-Gallon Pots:
Since the process is going to take some time, and is actually going to be some work, I don't want to mess it up by doing a weak job. I have some 2 gallon pots here at home already, but to make a really large batch of my first beer, I will need some 5-gallon pots to really beef up the batch.
Buckets:
While you or I could get by with one bucket, it is going to save a ton of time to just get two of them for the transfer of the brew. I think I'll order these from a brew supply operation online instead of grabbing some empty paint buckets from the garage. On top of not tasting all that great, I don't think paint is good to consume!
Strainer:
Brewing beer makes a sort of a stew called a wort which must be strained unless you like your beer chunky. Sometimes I hear you can get away with using panty hose or some kind of cheese cloth, but I think I will spend the extra few dollars and get a proper strainer so I don't end up with hairs or cheese in my beer.
Bottles & Caps:
Of course when the brew is ready to be bottled we are going to want some good bottles and caps to keep the air out and the freshness in. We certainly don't want to do it like that one guy I met who bottled his beer in a 2-litre empty soda container that one time. It went really flat and was kind of nasty.
Of course the most important thing is the home brewing kit for beginners is going to have are the hops and the yeast and all of the good stuff that gives the beer its taste and alcohol content during fermentation.
The process takes a long time compared to simply going to the local liquor store and purchasing a 30-pack of your favorite watered-down pilsner but it is so worth it for the great taste you get from some really good home brewed beer.
The biggest problem that I see in the whole process is going to be keeping my hands off of the finished product actually. I really love beer and can drink it any hour of the day, any day of the week. I can drink it when I'm sick, hungover and when I'm happy.
I don't know if brewing my own beer at home is going to be the best thing for my overall health, but I really can't wait to give it a try. If you want to try brewing your own beer too just make sure not to skimp on the ingredients that are going to give your beer all of its taste. That's what the stuff from the store is for!
