Make Your Own Still

The material you are about to read should be used for your personal use only. The product made from a still should not be sold for proffit. Due to the high potency of the product it should be used for your own consumption only. In this post you will learn how to make a simple home based still to brew moonshine. whiskey, or what ever else you feel like making.

Materials needed: 5 Gallon or smaller steel cooking pot. (2.) 1/2 inch copper pipe (3.) copper heating coil (4.) 5 gallon bucket (5.) thermometer (6.) 2 rubber bungs for high heat (7.) outdoor cooker (8.) black office clips(used to combine large amounts of paper)

Tools needed: (1.) drill (2.) solder wire (3.) torch

Directions:

  • The first step is to take your copper pipe and cut a 6-8 inch peice off. Then drill a hole approx 3/4 inch in the top of the lid to the pot. Insert a Hi heat rubber bung into the 3/4 inch hole. Then insert the cut peice of copper pipe into the rubber bung. Next find a drill bit that is close to the same width of your thermometer. Drill another hole in the top of the lid. Then insert the thermomter into the lid making sure it is a snug fit. This step can be skipped if your have a magnetic or sticky thermomter. If you have one of these thermomters you can apply to the pot.
  • Now you will connect a 45 degree copper fittting on the top of the copper peice you cut and just installed into the top of the pot. Next you will need another copper pipe approx 12-18 inches long. Attach that peice in a downward position to the 45 degree fitting. Next you will install a copper coupling to the bottom of the peice you just installed. Then connect the copper coil. Extend the coil slightly so it looks like a downward spiral.
  • Once all of your copper is properly fit together you need to solder the pipe together. Make sure every pipe is fitting tightly together before soldering. Soldering can asily be done by heating the pipe with a torch first. While the flame is on the pipe take your soldering wire and apply it to the copper and copper couplings. Make sure that it creates a water tight seal with eachother. If this is your first time welding or soldering pipe, you may want to watch a tutorial video or read more about it first.
  • Next take your 5 gallon bucket and drill a 3/4 inch hole on the very bottom side of the bucket. Insert your rubber bung. Then take the copper coil and push it through the bung hole so about an inch of the ending is sticking on the outside of the bucket.

Now you are ready to test the pipe. I usually test my connections with water. This will also help flush any impurities out of the system. Just simply spray a hose through the pipe watching for any water leaks. Once you have determined there are no leaks, you are ready to start making Shine.

Put your still on your outdoor cooker, add the mash to the pot, secure the lid with the industrial sized paper clips, and start cooking. Make sure the temperature does not get to boiling. A good temperature for moonshine is between 165 and 175 F. The copper coil or worm goes into the 5 gallon buket as described above. Add as much ice as you can to the bucket. When the ice becomes water make sure you continue to add ice. This is imperative to the condensation of the alcahol. Once the alcahol gets hot it creates steam. The steam travels down the pipe into the coil or condensor, changing it back into a liquid. Once it comes out of the copper ending it is a potent alcahol commonly known as grain alcahol. An easy way to test if you have made your mash the proper way is to simply try to light a spoonfull of the stuff.

There are many different recipes for homemade alcahol. My favorite is apple pie moonshine. It has a smooth apple flavor with a bite to remember.
