Do I Have Bed Bugs

Bed bugs were a big problem when I was a boy. Now again, people are asking, "Do I have bed bugs?" The fact of the matter is that once eliminated the little buggers are back.

I remember the frustration of bed bugs and the red welts they left on your arms, legs and back. The bits could itch like heck and the biting buggers could wake you up in the night.

We got rid of bed bugs temporarily by scrubbing the bed springs in lye soap. That is where they loved to nest. They also hid in creases and seams along the side of the mattress. We would take a scrub brush and scrub and scrub and scrub.

When DDT was invented, that was the end of bed bugs. One swish and they were gone. When I was in Korea the army dusted us with DDT from head to foot to kill any fleas that carry the bubonic plague. Then biologist found that DDT was softening the egg shells of birds of prey and the eggs were breaking in the nest killing the chicks. That was the end of DDT in the United States and eventually in other countries. Thousands have died of malaria because DDT was banned.

Folks are picking up bed bugs when they stay in hotels and motels. They carry them home and the misery begins. They call an exterminator but most exterminators don't have what it takes to kill a bed bug. They have grown resistant to most chemicals. Calling an untrained exterminator in bed bug warfare can be a waste of money.

When I was a little boy my mother told me that I had chicken pox. I told her it was just bedbug bites. But she called the board of health and the inspector came down and looked at my backside and said that I indeed had chicken pox. Then he slapped a sign in the front window of our home saying, "Chicken Pox" in big capital letters. It was a warning for the neighbors to stay away and a ten-day confinement to me. Well we seldom have a case of chicken pox anymore but we do have bed bugs.

If you have bedbugs ask your chamber of commerce for a list of qualified bed bug exterminators. In Idaho we have bed bugs up around Sun Valley and probably everywhere else. One northern exterminator does not use chemical to kill bed bugs. He closes up the home and places space heaters. Then he heats the place to 125 degrees fahrenhite. He claims that bed bugs can not take the heat and that the process kills every last one of the little buggers.

It makes me crawl to think about bed bugs. There are web sites that can help you get rid of them and other pest.
