What is Gout?
Gout is a disease that is caused by the build up of uric acid in the body. Normally we filter this out through our kidneys but some people produce more uric acid than their bodies can flush out. The excess acids crystallize and they get trapped in the joints, causing all kinds of swelling and pain and even can damage the joints. The spells can come on very quickly and usually go away by themselves after about one week. There are many factors in getting Gout. It can run in the family, and it can be caused by a poor lifestyle.
Is it treatable?
It is very much treatable and even preventable if taken seriously. The first step to take if you have a flair up is to get to a doctor and get diagnosed to find out if you are in need of medication. Aside from medical treatment there are other things you can do to help avoid flair ups or even never having any symptoms return.
- Diet: Gout is unheard of in Vegetarians. A high fiber/low fat diet is essential. Eat many different fruits and drink plenty of juices. Avoid high acid and overly processed foods.
- Maintain a healthy weight and get plenty of exercise. Excess weight makes the body create excess uric acid
- Avoid Alcohol! If you drink, especially beer, you double your chances of getting Gout.beer has a high level of purine, which triggers Gout
If you do have a flair up there are several things you can do at home to make the experience a bit less painful.

- Dink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day to flush out the excess acid in your system.
- Apple Cider Vinegar and Honey, (2 tablespoons each mixed ) will take away the pain.
- Soak effected area in Epsom salt and water solution
The best thing to do if you are one of the many to have to deal with this disease is follow your doctors directions and eat right and maintain a healthy lifestyle. If you do find yourself with a flareup follow some home remedy treatments for gout.

Thanks for all the advice, that was very useful to know.
Body pH has a lot to do with it and taking natural pH corrective steps I'm sure will reduce the problem in the less serious cases...
Gout affects sufferers differently and to varying degrees, but it can usually be managed by diet, medication, reduced alcohol and losing weight. You cannot cut out purines (which cause uric acid) completely as most foods contain them including meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables. With regard beer, it is the yeast that contains the purines. Whether eating a diet rich in purines or drinking alcohol, it is excessive eating and/or drinking that can cause problems. As you say Shawn, it is a form of arthritis and for many sufferers it is a genetic problem.
I have an uncle who had gout and remember how painful it was. He had a very rich diet and ate fatty deli foods like corned beef and pastrami and smoked fish. He was from New York, so he frequented the deli restaurants in the garment district. Hardly worth it, even though he had a lot of fun. I've read it's related to arthritis.
Another great article with very sensible advice Shawn. From what I've read this is another 'lifestyle' dis-ease. Hopefully articles like yours can raise awareness and help people avoid the problem rather than having to 'cope' with it!
Good informative article Shawn. I feel bad for those who suffer from Gout because it can be so painful. Thankfully there are many things people can do with diet to lessen the effects
Incredible picture. Ouch! Hmm, curious about the apple cider vinegar and honey... is that to swallow or paste on?
