How To Protect Our Family From The Flu

Influenza or flu is caused by a virus, a microscopic agent that infiltrates our living cells. The flu viruses reproduce rapidly, which attacks the respiratory system, and it passes from one person to another primarily in droplets of body fluids expelled when the infected person sneeze, coughs, or even speaks. The flu often affects many people at once but differently. They thought the flu is a respiratory illness, but it affected the whole body. And it was not only affects humans but animals can get affected, too...as well.

The flu is usually more common during colder months. They said that in cold weather the outer membrane of a virus becomes a protective gel that prolongs the life of the virus in the air but then melts in higher temperatures of the human respiratory tract, causing infection. Cold air does not cause viral infections, but it can create the setting that helps them to spread.

Symptoms of flu are usually worse than cold and last longer. And much intense like getting high fever, headache, fatigue, with dry cough, runny nose and muscle aches. But it doesn't cause vomitting or diarrhea in adults. Should stay home when you feel you have symptoms to avoid infecting other people. Get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and eat a lot of fruits. And it would be helpful if you take anti-viral drugs right after the onset of symptoms. But acetaminophen is not advisable to give to children who have the flu. Taking Vitamin C everyday is very helpful to your health.

Sometimes the flu can lead to a bacterial infection, such as an ear infection, a sinus infection, or bronchitis. In rare cases, it may cause a more serious problem, such as pneumonia that may lead to death. Watch for pneumonia like symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, chest pain, or severe headache. If a person with the flu feels very sick.....Even healthy people got flu.

But there are some basic protective steps we can do to our health to prevent getting the flu:

1. Get flu shot...every flu season to prevent chances of becoming sick If needle fears are keeping you away, ask about the shot that uses an ultrafine needle (it's 90% smaller).

2. Strengthen your body: Have your family get sufficient sleep at least 6-8 hours for adults, longer for the young, and eat a good healthy diet. Diet like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, which supply the amino acids needed to build up our immune system. If possible a well balance diet is preferable. Get plenty of rest and regular exercise.

3. Try to be in an environment free from germs: In the kitchen if possible, keep your counters, tables, most especially the sink (where most bacteria stay) thoroughly clean everyday. Always wash cooking and eating utensils right after every use. In the toilet, maintain cleanliness. It is always best to keep this place dry. Don't leave your toothbrush uncovered. Wash your hands vigorously with soap before and after use. Throw the trash everyday. Bed linen should be washed every week. Wipe with a disinfectant, things people always touch like door knobs, telephones, remote controls, computer keyboard and also keep you home well ventilated. An air humidifier is great to have one.

4. Practice good habits of personal cleanliness: Wash your hands often with soap and water. Always carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you all the time. Never try to share towels with anyone for drying hands or face, not even with other family members.

5. Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands. Use disposable tissues to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and throw them right away. Avoid sharing devises to others like cellphones that can readily spread germs.

Our kids should be trained at a young age these good healthy habits while they're still young. Let them consistently practice this healthy habit, especially during the flu season.
