Living With Crohns Disease

We are born with a digestive system that allows us to intake and process food, retaining the nutrients that our body needs to function and removing all waste products. If we consume a fresh, balanced diet and maintain an active lifestyle, we can support the effective functions that take place inside our bodies.

If we eat at regular times, we can start to see a pattern in our energy levels, the times when we feel hungry and our bowel movements. We might notice a bloated feeling or abdominal pains after eating a particular meal, we can pick up a noticeable loss of appetite or become aware of significant changes to our bowel movements.

If you have become aware of such symptoms, along with weight loss, fatigue and mouth ulcers it is advisable to make an appointment with your GP. There are many causes of such symptoms, but in some people they can be the signs of Crohns Disease.

What is Crohns Disease?

Crohns Disease is an inflammation which can affect any part of the digestive system, although it is most common in the small intestine or colon. There is no certainty about the cause of the condition and no cure at present, but changes to your diet, prescribed medication or surgery could reduce the effects.

It is thought that genes or an abnormal reaction to naturally occurring bacteria in the gut are most likely to be at the root of the problem, so it isn’t something that can be prevented. Many people think it is a disease that affects older people, but a third of suffers were diagnosed when they were under 21 and most will have had symptoms before they reach 40 years old.

Diet, Medication and Surgery

Crohns disease is a lifelong condition, but in milder cases a change in diet can help to manage the pain and discomfort of symptoms. Every individual will find certain foods act as a trigger which can result in a flare up, by eliminating these foods, the impact can be reduced.

Other patients are prescribed medication which, along with dietary changes can help them to live more comfortably with the condition. In more extreme cases, surgery is recommended to remove a particularly inflamed part of the bowel.

The surgery may result in the creation of a stoma. This could be a temporary or permanent measure which allows the body to continue its digestive processes and waste removal, but following a different route. Rather than passing through the anus, waste is passed out of the stoma into a pouch.

It may be a shock to discover that you will have a stoma and many people are concerned about how this will impact on their work, family life, interests and sex life. There is plenty of specialist support along with patient forums to help answer your questions and ensure that you can continue to live a full life.

The stoma itself looks a little like a circle of deep pink gum. It has no nerve endings or feeling, so causes no pain. Effective materials are now widely used in stoma care products and medical adhesives to provide a secure yet comfortable fit for the stoma pouch. Whilst it does take time to adjust, such medical adhesives and products do provide reassurance that you can continue with most activities. If you have been through surgery and are seeking a reliable supplier of stoma products and lifestyle advice visit Trio Ostomy Care.
