Making Homemade Soaps

I have made the decision since I have the time to do this that it is time to start making my own home products. What better way to be in control of what ingredients I can use and how healthy the products I can make will be. I thought what better way to start than to start making homemade soaps.

What are the benefits?

I was really surprised at how much information is on the web about this topic. I guess people have been doing this for years and at one point we got away from doing it. Lately many people are going back to the basics of making their own soap. I found many different recipes when doing a search. Most factory made soaps remove the glycerin from the soap and sell it separately. This is really the part you want as it attracts moisture to your skin. You have all had that dry feeling after a shower right? that is the soap taking the moisture out of your skin. Another benefit is you get to choose what goes in it as far as what kinds of fragrance and such, and this can be the best part if you have sensitive skin.

Is it dangerous?

I found a site that covered the dangers of making homemade natural soap on a soap making forum. Homemade soap ingredients can be flammable, and a bit of care needs to be taken when working with them. this site has the instructions of making herbal soap.Several things I learned were never breath the lye fumes, and this is not something to do with the kids around. Homemade soap making is a simple process but it can be a bit dangerous if it is your first time. It is suggested to study up on it before you actually try it and make sure to follow all the precautions.

Where can I get what I need to make it?

You can get the ingredients at most grocery stores and pharmacies. It can actually turn out to be cheaper than store bought soaps, and if you get good at it you can move on to laundry detergent and dish detergent. It is a good feeling being able to use something you created with your own hands, and not be married to what the companies feel you should be using.

As with any home project, do some research, follow the safety tips, and start on your adventure when you are ready and armed with what you need to do the job.

I will report back with the results of how my first batch turns out. Happy soap making!
