Naturally Remedies To Sooth And Treat A Sore Throat

Between allergy season that's got me miserable and my husband with a cold, sore throats are inevitable in our home for the moment. It's awful and unfortunate, but reality nevertheless reality and time to deal with it. So after using what I know helps, and a few other remedies I stumbled upon, I have a little collection of natural ways to soothe and hopefully get rid of that nasty sore throat.

When you start feeling that too familiar feeling of a sore throat coming on, there are a few things going on that make you feel that way. There is a tube that goes from the back of your mouth down to your esophagus called the pharynx. It basically becomes inflamed, tender, and swollen leaving you with a scratchy and sore sensation.

What are we to do? Here are a few things that have proven effective to my family and many others...

Gargle. There are a few choices of what you can gargle to get immediate and lasting relief.

What causes these ingredients to work is they kill bacteria and relieve pain and inflammation. Some are easier to stand than others if you're sensitive to the taste. Make sure you gargle with warm water and for a minimum of 30 seconds, but longer if you can, for the best results.

  • Salt
  • sage
  • cayenne pepper
  • turmeric
  • raspberry leaf tea
  • ginger

Another route is to drink cider vinegar with honey. Combine equal parts with 8 ounces warm water and sip slowly. It doesn't sound very tasty but it's not as bad as it sounds.

Citrus helps cut mucus and can thereby relive throat irritation. The vitamin C is an added benefit, too. Lime or lemon, mix 1 tablespoon with 1 tablespoon honey and sip away. This is very good tasting and easier for small children to take.

If gargling isn't your thing and you want to try something else, drinking hot liquids is best. This will coat your throat and act almost like a hot pack on infected skin. Teas, hot lemon water, coffee, whatever you prefer will bring some comfort. It's important to keep hydrated to keep the throat from further drying out and shorten the duration of the discomfort.

Here's one that can be a little hard for some to handle, but does the job...suck on garlic. Placing a clove in your mouth and sucking on it like a cough drop releases a natural chemical called acillin. This kills bacteria including the bacteria that causes strep. If garlic pure garlic doesn't bother you, this is a good route.

Lastly, rest up. Whatever is causing your discomfort, your body is working overtime to get it fixed so make sure you get enough rest and quality sleep. On that not, I'm off to bed!

Ally, this one is a great help! If accompanied by a cough I know that vicks vapour rub on the soles of the feet (with socks to contain the mess) works a treat at bedtime. Very curious about the sucking a garlic clove bit! I guess if you had a sore throat you wouldn't feel like kissing anyone either! They sure wouldn't feel like kissing you! lol
