Recovering From Illness: Self Care Advice

The diagnosis of a major illness is always a shock, but with advances in medical science more people than ever are fighting back. Firstly doctors are increasingly likely to be able to accurately diagnose the health issue. As a result, they can recommend the best course of action to deal with the problem, be it surgery, treatment, medication or a combination of all three.

It may seem that your life is in their hands, but there are plenty of ways in which you can take action to further improve your chances of a good recovery. These often include small, yet significant lifestyle changes, which can help your body’s natural immune system to function effectively.

Refuelling

Your body needs energy to function. Amongst many other things, your body uses this energy to repair, rejuvenate and replace cells. The better the fuel, the easier it is for your body to function effectively. Eating a balanced, nutritious diet, which includes fresh produce and a good range of foods, is going to benefit your health.

The body also undertakes a lot of repair and rejuvenate work when you are asleep. Without needing to exert energy on other activities, it can focus on recovering from the previous day’s activities and preparing for what’s in store. When we are ill, we need more time to rest and sleep in order to give our bodies a fair chance.

Stress is an effective way to drain us of energy and deplete our natural resources. When you are unwell, it is important to not try and carry on as normal. Excuse yourself from any non-essential tasks. It might be hard to believe, but the world won’t fall apart if you take some time out.

Having said this, exercise is an important activity. If you have been given advice from the doctor, nurse of physio, follow it. If not, a daily walk in the fresh air can lift your mood, help you to build strength and support your bodily functions. It is advisable to check with a medical professional before undertaking more rigorous exercise.

Mind Over Matter

A positive attitude isn’t always easy and can be a real challenge when you are in pain or feel restricted by what you can and can’t do. There are however plenty of studies to show that people who generally adopt a positive attitude and fighting spirit are more likely to regain their health.

Counselling can be an effective way to help you focus on your thoughts, feelings and attitude. In a confidential environment, you can talk honestly, share feelings, challenge negative thoughts and explore actions that you might take to help move things forward. Counselling can help you to adapt to an altered way of life, or support you with communicating facts and feelings with children and other family members.

In addition to prescribing medication or treatment, your doctor or nurse might recommend products that will help you care for your body in the long term.
