Top 10 Qualities Of A Telenurse

Telenursing is the new frontier of nursing. In order to succeed in this field, nurses must develop particular skills in order to be a competent telenurse. This type of nursing is exciting, innovative, and on the front lines. The skills you need are obtainable by anyone no matter what age, gender, nursing speciality, or interest. In fact, nurses with a great deal of experience have a huge advantage in telenursing. Your experience and intuition is exactly what employers are looking for. In no particular order, here are the top 10 qualities of a telenurse.

The telenurse must be flexible with patients on the other end. The nurse has less control in this field versus an inpatient setting. We determine most aspects of the patient's stay while in the facility. However, the patient has much more control while being on a phone or computer. You should adapt and be flexible when their phone reception is crap, you hear chips munching, you hear a disturbing dog screech , or the patient keeps saying, "WHAT?! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" Turn on your super zen-ness and go with the flow. You're in the patient's world now.

As a telenurse, you are going to be exposed to a large selection of technology. Your technological comfortability should be high but if not, this can be developed. You will be working with eMARS, monitoring equipment, gadgets, and doo-hickies. The amount of technology can be overwhelming but exciting too. Take your time and you will become comfortable. Google is your friend when search new technologies.

Intelligence comes in all shapes and forms. A successful telenurse is emotionally intelligent. E.I. is vastly important because you must pick up on all the little non-verbal cues, tone elevations, abnormal eye blinks, or changes in behavior. If you can manage your emotions, you can quickly identify with your patients over the phone or video. Ultimately, you will be able to "pick-up" changes other non-emotionally intelligent nurses won't.

Being an excellent listener in nursing, is a big, " A DUH!" Good listening is a cornerstone of assessment. And, not being in person makes listening even more vital. Make sure you are in the moment and completely focused on the patient. Don't be thinking about your itunes playlist or next installment of, "Say yes to the dress." So, maybe I watch it with my girlfriend (Don't judge). Having excellent listening skills is a must.

As a telenurse, you are going to see many more patients. Particularly, you will be exposed to strange and out of the ordinary situations. If you are caring and understanding of these people, they will open up to you and share their story. Their story is remarkable and beyond important to provide care. If you adopt this mentality, your patients will be appreciative and look forward to each of your calls.

You are going to be exposed to new technologies, research, gadgets, programs, software, and presentations on a regular basis. Like the lottery number selector, the telenursing world is bouncing around and is in flux right now. Your ability to actively learn about these new emerging technologies and ideas will promote your success. Maybe you could look up telenurse blogs, special interests groups, or forums to become more acquainted.

You must have top notch assessment skills. I know I don't need to elaborate much. As a telenurse, you no longer have access to all of your senses. You can't smell, touch, taste, or hear (as much). I wouldn't recommend tasting anything. Yuck! But, you do have the ability to ask engaging questions. You will see their face and hear the voice. Make sure you improve and continue to build your assessment skills to be top-notch!

As nurses, we are educators. In the digital world of telenursing, education is as important as the ABCs. Of course, don't stop CPR on a Code Blue to teach about heart attack prevention. Silly goose. But, use your experience, education, and training to help teach your patients and help them for the better. Education is the key to health promotion and disease prevention. Telenursing care is an excellent medium to provide health education.

Lastly, your technology will fail you. Internet connection will be slow or not connect. Your software will crash. Your camera won't work. Printers won't print. eMARs will take a poopy. So many other situations. You are about to be very dependent on electronic devices that you have little control over. When they break, treat your techie people nice and with respect. No wonder why they stay in caves (not all of them). When people call, most are upset about something. I would too if I were in their shoes. As a telenurse, we are dependent on them as much as we are on our bank. In other words, happie techie people equals a paycheck.

This is not an exhaustive list by any means. But, this should give you a solid and fun primer into the qualities of telenurse. Now go have an adventure in this up and coming world of nursing.
