10x12 Shed Plan Roof Designs

10x12 is one of the more popular sizes of shed plans because it is small enough to be cost effective and large enough to hold plenty of outdoor equipment. A 10x12 shed plan can have a door large enough for regular or riding lawn mowers, it can hold bikes and lawn furniture. There are several different architectural styles to choose from, which one you pick depends on how you plan to use the shed and how it will compliment your yard. Your shed plans will tell you how to build the roof style that you chose when purchasing the plans.

Roof Types

The roof of a 10x12 shed is probably the most defining factor of shed design. Things like roof pitch, eve overhang, and the number of roof planes will greatly affect the look of your shed. The four basic types are Gable Roof, Lean To Roof, Salt Box Roof and Gambrel Roof.

Gable

A gable roof shed is defined by two roof planes that meet in the center of the shed. The two roof planes have the same pitch or angle which gives the shed design a symmetrical look. This is probably the most common type of shed roof design.

Lean To

A lean to shed roof has a single plane that goes from one side of the shed to the other without any breaks in the plane. It is very simple to build which makes it another shed that is easy to build. The lean to shed design is popular with people who like to have a modern looking shed. When the lean to shed is used as a office or work studio there are usually lots of windows added and a nice door. This gives the shed an almost industrial look which fits right in with the professional office persona. 10x12 office shed plans are very popular for people building a home office. This size gives you enough room to have your work area and a few chairs for visitors. If you simply want to use the lean to to store things, it is good for that as well. The low sloping roof design works well up against a wall or fence.

Salt Box

The salt box roof design has two roof planes that are different lengths. This is done by moving the ridge off the center of the shed. The roof planes are typically at different pitches but they can be made the same. This design came from people adding onto their existing house by extending the roof down on one side, which made one side of the roof longer.

Gambrel

This is the most complicated shed roof design. But it is also the one that allows the most storage in the shed. Because the roof rises up so high above the shed there is usually a large amount of space overhead that can be made into a loft. 10x12 gambrel shed plans are about as small as you want to go with a gambrel roof if you plan to add a loft for extra storage. Any smaller and the shed is too small for a useable loft. If you are up for a challenge, the gambrel roof shed plan is a little tougher to build but the extra space and great “barn shed” look is a compliment to any yard.

No matter what style of shed you plan on building the 10x12 shed plan will give you plenty of versatility which translates into some great shed design options to help you get the perfect extra space you need. Research these roof styles to make sure you build a shed that makes your back yard look great and will give you the perfect place to store your things or spend time working.
