There are many different types of western horse bits with an intimidating range of parts that have different purposes. You can get overwhelmed with the choice and brands available.

So let’s start with what are the main common types of western bit and what’s our goal with our western horse?

So first we need understand the main different types of western bits and what they can do for us and our horse.

Young Western Horses

Most young horses start in a snaffle bit, the thinking behind this is that a young horse has a sensitive mouth and the goal is to ride to the mildest cues that the horse will respond too. Also the more pressure and abrasive the horse mouth is subjected too, the quicker their mouth will toughen and lose its sensitivity. Then finally we don’t want to overwhelm a young horse leading to them trying to evade the bit.

Older More Western Trained Horses

On older more trained horse then a curb bit could be used this is the next step up and comes in many styles and percentage of pressure. Also typically the curb bit is used for one handed neck reining for showing i.e. Western Pleasure where the smallest amount of movement on the reins is required by the rider.

The correction work, the final main type of bit is the correction bit, this type of bit is typically used for a short time to correct a problem.

So our three main types of western bits are snaffle bit, curb bit and correction bit (type of curb) and to help to see the understand between a snaffle bit and a curb bit in general a snaffle bit is a direct connection to the bit, where as a curb bit is a leverage bit, i.e. like a see saw. In other words a snaffle would be the middle of the see- saw and a curb bit would away from the middle with varying lengths.
