4 Options Every 2 Stall Horse Barn Should Have

In its most basic form the 2 stall horse barn has two rooms. There are several options that will make your horse barn more comfortable for your horses and more convenient for you to care for them. These options include increasing the stall size, adding a Dutch door, adding a lean to breezeway and adding a tack room for your horse riding gear and care equipment. These options can be done individually or in any combination to help you create the perfect home for your horses and the perfect place for you to work with them.

12x12 Horse Stalls

Even though a horse stall can be 10x10 feet you will find that, unless you have small horses, it is a little cramped when you want to be with the horse in the stall.

Horse barn stalls are typically 10x10 feet at the smallest and typically no larger than 12x12 with the latter being the most common size. A 12x12 horse stall allows plenty of room for larger horses as well as space for you to be with the horse inside the stall. When two 12x12 stalls are combined to make a 2 stall horse barn the overall dimension is 12x24 feet. This is why the most common size of the popular 2 stall horse barn is 12x24 feet.

Shed Doors

The shed doors on a two stall horse barn can be either a one piece door or a Dutch door with a separately operable top and bottom piece. The single piece door can be installed on hinges or on a track hanging from rollers depending on your preference. The Dutch door allows the upper half of the door to be opened while the lower half is locked. This allows the horse to see out of the stall and fresh air to move through the barn.

Lean To Breezeway

A great addition to your two stall horse barn is an open walled lean to shed on the front over the doorways. The open walls allow the horses to use the barn breezeway as a run in shed by providing them with some protection from the sun and rain without going into the barn stalls. The lean to covered area also provides great shelter for you to give your horse a bath or brush down.

Tack Room

A tack room that is attached to your two stall horse barn is the best way to keep your riding equipment close to your horse where it is used. It also allows you to store your horse care equipment like buckets for washing and carrying food, grooming tools, shovels and a refrigerator for medication or cold drinks right next to the horses stalls. Tack rooms are typically the same depth as the horse stall and at least 6 feet wide. The 6 foot wide dimension allows you to store things along one wall and still be able to walk along the full length of the tack room to access everything without tripping over equipment. A tack Room can be added to any 2 stall shed.

If you are building your own barn make sure that the 2 stall horse barn plans you pick have the options you want to include when you build. Building a horse shelter with large 12x12 stalls, Dutch doors, a lean to breezeway and a functional tack room will greatly increase your horses comfort as well as make using the horse barn much more enjoyable.
