So You Want A Horse

Owning a horse is a large responsibility, from the cost of the care to having the right facility to house it. So before you go out and buy your first horse you might want to take the following things into consideration.

Do you have enough acreage to accommodate a horse, do you have housing, will you need to put up proper fencing, depending where you live, it can be clear electric fencing with a good electric fencer, or board fencing. If you live where you get a lot of snow you may want to have electric fence, in the warmer months and for the winter months a board fenced in area where you can turn your horse out. A run shed is enough as long as the front of it is out of the prevailing wind, as a horse will do fine with a run in shed they just need to be able to get in out of the wind and wet.

There is the cost of the farrier which comes every six to eight weeks and depending on what you have done can range anywhere from $30-$65 for a trim, first time shoes $165-$185, the reset will run about $50 less as long as you don't have to replace a shoe. A vet is required in the spring for yearly vaccinations, the barn call runs from $50 up, and this is not including the cost of what you have done, spring shots, coggins and rabies, these cost are added on. Then you're looking at the cost of hay which a bale can cost from $2.75 to $4.00 a bale or more depending the quality, place and first or second cutting.

You may decide to board your horse, the cost of this depends on what the facility has to offer. A large facility with indoor riding arena, large box stalls, daily turn out can run as much as $300-$400 or more, again depending on place it can be more or less, this cost also includes hay and sweet feed. Some people offer pasture board which has a run in shed and a turn out area, some include hay and feed, the cost of this can run between $75-$100 depending on what they offer with the board fee. You can some times work a deal with a facility to clean your own stall, and provide your own feed and hay for a lesser boarding fee. If you have the acreage and want to take care of your own horse, allow an acre of land for one horse, you will have to feed hay, as an acre will not get you through, along with your sweet feed. A run shed is adequate and it is healthier for a horse to go in and out as to be shut in for weeks at a time in you live where the winters are harsh.

Owning a horse is one of the greatest things anyone can experience. There are a lot of responsibilities to it but it can be very rewarding. There is a great bond that can be developed between a horse and a human, trust, dependency and love. So here's hoping you find the horse of your dreams and enjoy the adventure of a lifetime.
