Avoiding Unnecessary Injuries at the Workplace

Every year a great deal of people around the world are injured at work. In the UK alone, approximately 111 000 injuries were recorded under Reporting of Injuries, Disease and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) in 2012 and 173 people were registered as killed at work. Some of these accidents are unavoidable, but in the instances where they are avoidable, it is due to a variety of issues such as the lack of effective protective safety equipment and negligence on the part of the employee or employer.

Because occupational illnesses and injuries are a leading cause of reduced productivity, with the UK reporting 27 million working days lost to these factors during 2011 and 2012, it is important to identify elements that can help prevent occupational injuries and illnesses.

Putting Up Signs

Though this is obvious and a requirement, it is not uncommon to see organisations that do not put up safety signs in areas that pose potential danger to personnel. It is important to mount signs where they can be seen clearly by all and when they become illegible, they must be refurbished or replaced without fail. Employees must be trained to identify each and every sign, with regular drills and tests being done to ensure they understand what to do when they come across a cautionary sign.

Drills and Training

Even if the chance of an accident occurring on your premises is one to a billion, it is important to carry out drills and training on a regular basis. This can lessen the amount of casualties if a disaster is to occur, as your employees will know what to do. Those who are designated to carry out roll call, administer first aid or direct personnel to safety must have intensive training and regular tests to ensure competency.

It's also advisable to invest in protective safety equipment , Pittman IE offers a wide range of fashionable clothing and things that you can add around the office premises such as speed ramps.

Purchasing, Using and Maintaining Effective Equipment

Whether it is protective safety equipment such as clothing and fire extinguishers or machinery such as drills and saws, it is important to acquire equipment that is compliant with safety regulations. This will ensure that each and every piece of equipment functions properly without posing danger to your personnel. What’s more, it is also important to train your staff on how to effectively use each and every piece of equipment they are in charge of.

Job Rotation

Employees who constantly do the same thing over and over again are more likely to suffer from occupational injuries than those who are exposed to more than just one responsibility. Repetitive actions are known to cause fatigue, loss of concentration or even injury without external influences. It is, therefore, important to practice job rotation where possible or to give your personnel a number of other duties.

All that has been mentioned is, in one way or another, covered in most health and safety regulations issued by government labour departments, so it is a prerequisite to follow each and every one of them. However, even in the cases that they are not, it will benefit your organisation to put them into practice.
