The ar15 was developed after studies concluded that the U.S. needed a new weapon to replace older designs that were used in previous wars. The ar15 encountered a few bumps along the road, including one that would directly affect you and I, if we wanted to own one. The bumps are gone now and the ar15 has become one of the most popular weapons of all time.

A Little History

The ar15 is the direct descendant of the 7.62 mm ar10. The ar15 is a product of the Armalite Corporation and was designed to be lighter than the ar10, basically a 5.56mm version of the ar10. In 1959 Armalite sold the rights to Colt, who after doing research in the far east, made their first sale to Malaysia on September 30th 1959. Colt sold the weapon to several other military services around the globe including our own here in the U.S. The Navy, Army, Marines and the Air Force were using the ar15.The ar15 was finally adopted by the U.S. and was designated the m16. The m16 was the same weapon as the ar15, except that it was now fully automatic. The ar15 was now a machine gun with a new name, the m16. The ar15 did not just go away after this transition. Colt continued to build and sell to law enforcement and civilian customers. Originally weighing just 6 pounds ( with an empty magazine ), the newer models eventually were fitted with a heavier barrel bringing the weight up to almost 8.5 pounds. The ar15 is very popular with Law Enforcement and Sportsmen everywhere due to its accuracy, ease of breakdown and reassembly.

The Inventor

After World War Two it was decided that a study should be conducted on weapons to be used on the modern battlefield. Studies showed that in WWI, WWII and Korea most kills from small arms were from a distance of 300 yards or less. The military decided that it should look at developing higher capacity and lighter weapons. Eugene Stoner, while working for the Armalite corperation got together with Winchester and developed a suitable cartridge that would fulfill the requirement. The result was the .223 rifle cartridge. It had low recoil, was very fast, light weight and was capable of penetrating a army helmet. The ar15 however, because of its design allowed the hot gasses into the bolt area and because of the powder used in the cartridge the gas would cause serious fouling which would cause the gun to jam. Stoner’s solution to the problem was to use a clean burning powder instead of the powder being used at the time. After Colt bought the rights to the ar15/m16 from Armalite it was put to use in Vietnam. Unfortunately, the cleaner burning powder specified by Stoner was not used and serious reliability problems arose, which cost many Boys their lives as the gun would jam during combat. These problems have been resolved and the ar15/m16 remains in use today and has the longest service life of any rifle in U.S. history.

Attributes

Some of the ar15’s attributes worth mentioning are: The receiver is made with a very corrosion resistant aircraft grade aluminium that is also very light. The weapon can be taken down quickly for cleaning and or repair. The gun can also host an array of ad on parts, such as bayonets, lights, scopes and different types of stocks. The synthetic stocks won’t weather, so they won’t get out of shape or fray with age. The round (.223 ) fired from the ar15 is small, high velocity and very accurate. When fired, the gas from the round is what forces the bolt backward to eject the spent round and initiate the reloading process. This is known as the, direct impingement gas system.

The Weapons Ban

The “Violent crime control law enforcement act of 1994” changed a few things for those folks who wanted to purchase an assault weapon for themselves. Whether you wanted an ar15 or any another type of assault weapon. Manufactures by law would now be limited on how they built the so called “assault weapon” Congress passed the new law on September 13 1994 and it was signed by President Bill Clinton the very same day. The ban on these weapons would last 10 years and only applied to those weapons manufactured after the date the law was signed. You would get the very same gun, but it wouldn’t have all the cool stuff, for instance, it would not have the lugs for a bayonet, no collapsible stocks, no flash suppressors and the clip could hold only 9 or 10 rounds, although clips made before the ban would fit and were readily available and the gun barrel was beveled at the end so that when the flash suppressor became legal again, you would just have to have it threaded and just screw it on. Not exactly sure how this saved lives or cut crime but it was law. The ban expired on September 13th 2004. There have been attempts made to renew the ban, but no bills have reached the floor for a vote.

In Closing

The ar15 has become one of the most effective weapons in the U.S. arsenal, because of its dependability, modular design and accuracy, the ar15 and the m16 have been around now for more than 5 decades. They are used around the world and even though new designs have been surfacing, they are still the primary weapon (rifle) used by our troops today.
