Whitetail Deer Calling

A lot of deer hunters believe that deer calls are the way to go. I'm going to discuss a little bit about whitetail deer calling and some misinformation some people have. Now what I'm going to tell you is what has worked for me and is therefore what I continued to use from very early on. It's like your favorite lure once you've had some success with it you tend to get the most success with it because it's the one you use most often.

But in general I have tried the grunt calling and it depends heavily on the time of the rut. One thing I could never quite nail down like, 'it was from October 30 to Novemeber 15 this year.' You have to be pretty good at telling how old scrapes and rubs are to be able to tell if the rut is on or if it is the prerut or what. This is one of the reasons I've stayed away from the grunt call. And the other thing is what if you have a doe tag. You wouldn't want to use a grunt call to call a doe.

Bucks follow does

So for these reasons I have most of my luck based on the premise that bucks follow does almost always since they were fawns following their mother around for safety reasons. And they are following the does during the fall for the purpose of mating. Usually this is when the deer season is throughout North America. Anyway, does and fawns are much much much,,,,,, did I say much less wary than the buck is. (Unless the buck is actively looking to mate sometimes they'll pay no mind to you at all). So since these does and fawns love to be around one another for safety and for social reasons it is much easier to call fawns and does than it is a buck and what we're hoping is that the buck follows the doe into your site and gives you the opportunity for a shot.

Loud and aggressive calls versus soft calls

Grunt calls are loud and aggressive calls that can be heard very long distances and if not done real well they are going to fall on deaf ears. Wheras the soft communication calls that all deer love is what they will respond to far more often. I've seen it where a soft fawn bleat brings in a doe and the buck was right on her tail not more than a few feet from my stand. I didn't harvest this big fella but I filmed it as it looked right up at me then quickly looked away following that doe again. Priceless. That experience right there is why I hunt and should be the reason most deer hunters hunt. It is a bonus if you harvest any meat.

Another time I saw a few deer about a hundred yards away walking along a road sort of away from me. I pulled out my very soft call (which you inhale to call as opposed to the grunt call), and gave one soft communication call. So soft you would think it would never reach those ears. But it does. The closest deer to me stopped and turned it's ears towards me and the rest stopped. Just one more call I thought, maybe two if they being to move on. I really wished I had my fawn bleat with me that day. They can't resist a fawn call that indicates the fawn is not with other deer and wanting to be with other deer. Anyway they came within about 50 yards then kind of split up searching for where the sound had come from. I stopped after my third call and then just watched them as they moved away. Again that day I was only scouting around so there was no shooting. But once again priceless.

There you have it that's my take on deer calls. I hope this helps and my final words are to get yourself a fawn bleat can and a communication call that you inhale to make it so you can't make a loud noise if you tried.
