Ok, so your ready to take the plunge, ready to search for your dream machine. It's probably never been easier to find the right car with the world economy how it is but whether it is your first car or you have decided it's time to change your current car there are a few pointers to Always keep in mind before you part with your hard earned cash!

A few simple questions and observations about the proposed car should make sure you don't end up spending more than you intended down the line.

The first thing you must decide is whether it is a new or a used car that you want? If you are a first time buyer then it will probably be a used one and this has many benefits, such as choice and lower prices, but there can also be drawbacks if you just rush in. Take your time to follow a few simple steps and you should end up smiling.

The most important thing about any used car is it's history!. Don't be fooled by a well polished paint job. Have a good look around it, looking out for any signs of rust, paint that doesn't quite match, general wear and tear. Test drive it, listen for anything that you feel doesn't sound or feel right. If that goes well, move on to asking the seller a few vital questions -

The number of previous owners?

Was the car ever involved in an accident?

If so, what was the damage?

Has the seller got a maintenance history for the car?

Any previous problems? mechanical or electrical issues

Is the mileage genuine?

What mileage does the car give for a full tank?

What is the cost of a service?

If any of the answers to the above questions are not to your liking then simply walk away!! You do not want to be paying expensive, unforeseen repair bills down the road. Remember, as a used car buyer you have the advantage as you are the one holding the cash. My website gives you a lot more pointers, as well as filing you in on what car dealers don't want you to know. Why not have some serious knowledge before you go looking in the first place, after all, you earned your money so why would you want to throw it away on something that won't last.

Street Talk

Great questions! Good advice. My first car was used and was great for 14 months while I saved for a new one. My philosophy was to keep my new car:-) As in, drive it, "Forever!" 'til each one, "Has To" be replaced. Happy now with my "old" "New Volvo" since to me it still feels new.
