Does Rhodiola Help to Lower Blood Pressure?

Rhodiola is a herb indigenous to the northern regions of Asia and parts of Europe. In ancient times it was commonly referred to as “the golden root” and was relied upon for its ability to strengthen the immune system and enhance endurance. In fact, it is said that because of its ability to enhance strength and vigor this root was once a part of the Soviet Union secret weapon in their quest to prevail against the West. But apart from its ability to strengthen the immune system and improve physical stamina, rhodiola has also been used to successfully treat a variety of ailments including tuberculosis, cancer, cold, flu, depression, memory loss, coronary impairment and sexual dysfunctions.

Some studies have also shown that rhodiola may be an effective therapy in treating hypertension. Hypertension is a condition that presents when the pressure exerted inside the walls of the blood vessels exceed the normal range of 120/80. Typically, a reading above 140/90 is considered hypertensive. When this occurs efforts must be made to return the pressure to normalcy. Various drug therapies have traditionally been used to achieve this outcome, but in recent times sufferers of hypertension have increasingly been relying on natural herbal treatments like rhodiola supplements.

In addition to its many benefits, rhodiola is also said to be a potent adaptogen. Adaptogens are generally defined as non-specific remedies that increase the body’s resistance to a broad spectrum of physical and psychological stresses. Studies have shown that when stress levels are high abnormal levels of stress hormones are released into the blood stream. Some of these hormones are known to engender elevated blood pressure. Two in particular, catecholamines and corticosteroids are found in high quantities when the body experiences high levels of stress.

Given the challenges of modern life it is difficult to totally insulate ourselves against stress and the negative impact it have on our general wellbeing. Everyday our bodies are bombarded with stressors from all directions and unless we can take the necessary steps to minimize this onslaught our lifespan will be significantly diminished. Rhodiola has been found to be an effective natural treatment in helping to lessen the deleterious impact of stress related hormones. In doing so it has also been shown to be an effective therapy in reducing blood pressure naturally. Rhodiola, like other herbal remedies can be taken as a tea or in supplement form. But do remember as it is with all other natural treatments, please consult your physician prior to using this herb.
