How to Remove the Bark From A Coconut Without An Implement

As a youngster I was a member of the Boys Scout which meant that we often went on camping trips. These trips in reality were designed around a series of challenges that for the most part tested our survival skills. Some of the more vivid challenges that I can recall involved building a raft from wood without nail or rope; starting a fire without matches, building tents with all natural materials and finding your own food in the wild.

Although finding food was meant to be a challenge for us it was actually quite easy because the forest was always replete with fruits and berries and along the coastline was groves of coconut trees. Perhaps climbing the trees to retrieve the fruits and the extracting the fruit from the bark was more challenging than finding the coconuts themselves. But, with practice this became quite easy for most of the boys as well.

Now, I should point out that if you were willing to eat dried coconut, you really didn’t have to go to the trouble of climbing the tree. Usually there would be an abundance of dried fruits lying on the ground. The biggest problem then was getting to the coconut water and the coconut meat which were beneath the rock hard outer shells. To get to the meat and water we employed a process called “barking”.

To bark a coconut, simply take the coconut and pound the bottom end (the end that was not attached to the tree) on a piece of rock or a piece of hard wood (sometimes we would pound it on the coconut tree itself if there was nothing else around) until the outer shell bursts. Typically because of the way the coconut is shaped it will burst on three sides. When this happens grab each piece of the bark and pull it away from the center. This will leave you with the husk surrounding the hard inner shell.

To remove the husk, pound the coconut on the head (the part that was attached to the tree) until the husk loosens. Now pull the husk away from the hard inner shell with your teeth (hopefully your teeth are strong). Do this until all the husk is removed exposing the hard inner shell. At the top of this shell you will find three formations that look like eyes. Look at these closely and confirm which one is penetrable. When you prick this with a sharp stick you will be able to suck out the coconut water.

Now if you wish to get to the coconut meat, simply pound the shell on a hard surface until it breaks open. Without the use of any utensils your best bet is to break the shell into small pieces so that your teeth can grab the meat and separate it from the shell.

Recent findings have confirmed that coconut has many health benefits including relief from high blood pressure and various skin conditions. Plus many professionals have reported that coconut oil is highly effective when included as part of a weight loss program. These and other benefits of coconut place it among one of the most valuable foods on earth and as a result I’m glad to know that my days as a boy scout was time well spent.
