New Discovery Ties Antioxidant Rich Berries to Lower Blood Pressure

Health professionals are continually searching for natural ways to safely lower blood pressure among the one billion or so persons that suffer from this malady worldwide. A myriad of natural and medical treatments have been recommend over the years with varying degrees of success but because of the side effects associated with prescribed medications many persons are now favoring natural treatments for hypertension. Diet, lifestyle changes and natural supplements are among the leading non-medical treatments employed nowadays. The use of certain fruits and herbs, in particular, are also receiving attention for their impact in lowering blood pressure.

High blood pressure as you may already know impacts more than a quarter of the world’s population. It’s a condition where the pressure in the circulatory system exceeds the recommended 120/80 (systolic/diastolic). Persons whose pressure is consistently 160/90 (systolic/diastolic) and beyond are said to be suffering from high blood pressure and must take immediate action to return their pressure to recommended levels. This can be done with prescribed medication or naturally through the use of any number of natural remedies. However, because of reduced side effects many persons are now favoring the use of natural therapies. In a fourteen year long longitudinal study it was discovered that subject who ate at least a coup of berries daily exhibited a lower probability of developing hypertension than those who did not. These findings prompted researchers to conclude that blue berries minimize the risk of developing this ailment. Scientists believe that berries such as blue berries contain a bioactive compound called anthocyanin and it is this daily intake of anthocyanins that’s responsible for the prevention of high blood pressure. Other berries that contain this compound include raspberries and strawberries.

If you’re looking for natural ways to keep your blood pressure low including a regular serving of berries, blue berries in particular may be the way to go. Blue berries grow naturally throughout North America and are harvested almost year round. The price is a little costly, but if you shop around you may be able to save a few dollars here and there. I would not buy too much at once because they tend to perish easily. A three to five-day supply should be sufficient for any one time. If your budget permits why not purchase a combination of these bioactive compound laden berries especially those that are in season. This would be easier on your pocket and would more or less guarantee your daily supply of anthocyanin.
