Praying For The People Of Oklahoma
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

As we go through our daily activities we must continue to pray for the people of Oklahoma, particularly Moore, Oklahoma who has endured the death and devastation just visited on them by the recent tornado. Pray especially for the families who have lost children from the Plaza Tower Elementary School. We pray that their souls rest in peace and that their love one find the strength to carry on under such brutal predicament.

Having seen pictures of the devastation one can only imagine the utter terror that consumed those who experienced this monster tornado. Certainly it is not tantamount to anything we are faced with on a normal day. Some have compared it to the destruction caused by the 1999 tornado, but many claimed that this is by far the most destructive. In 1999 forty six persons died and more than 8000 homes were destroyed. So far, 24 deaths have been confirmed in this latest disaster, but no estimate was proffered on property damage, but like 1999 it is believed to be in the thousands. President Obama called it “one of the most destructive tornados in history”.

As you probably already know, the people of Oklahoma are strong and resilient and of course they are promising to rebuild once the cleanup is done. This is certainly a spirit of survival and indicates that while homes and structures were lost and in some cases love ones were taken away Oklahomans have not lost their strong drive to survive and will certainly triumph over this tragedy in due time.

I am concerned however, that despite the fact that Oklahomans are set to recover from this tragedy the residual impact of calamities such as this could devastate the body for a long time. It is well established that tragedies such as this recent tornado usually set the conditions for the development of oxidative stress and post traumatic stress disorders.

Oxidative stress impacts the body at the cellular level and can often lead to many common health conditions such as hypertension. On the other hand, post traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) are psychologically based and are likewise associated with calamities and devastations. Typically individuals suffering from PTSD may show symptoms of anxiety, paranoia, irrational fear or helplessness. Persons who present with these symptoms for extended periods may also find increases in their blood pressure levels. Increases in blood pressure levels may lead to other serious health conditions therefore every effort should be made to control blood pressure naturally or with medication.
