Something I Learned From My Trip to the Mall

The mall is an interesting place. There are people, stores of all sorts abound and there is an atmosphere of excitement and exhilaration. People from the local area, out of town, out of state and many from international countries are moving about. Some just were browsing and window shopping while others were rushing through the crowd with a sense of urgency. Where are they off to? May be back to work I though. Yet many were busy talking and laughing with their friends while seemingly happy to part with their hard earned dollars for so called bargains. Everyone walks up and down with bags in hand, showing off their purchases.

You can see the names of the stores on the bags and I thought how sneaky; each store is trying to squeeze every bit out of you even through advertisements; and in a way you can’t blame them – the cost of advertising is awfully high these days so if you can get customers to advertise for you for free, why not access this benefit. I don’t believe that too many companies would decline this opportunity and not too many people are aware that they are advertising or if they are they don’t have a problem doing it gratis.

Now less I digress let me get back to the point of this article which is to tell you about something I learned at the mall. As I watched people carrying their various shopping bags, my eyes latched on to a guy, maybe in his thirties, carrying a bag with pictures of cooking skillets displayed on the outside. And I thought how interesting, this guy or at least someone in his family will be preparing freshly cooked meals. My initial reaction was boy that’s really great. If he and his family eat just one freshly prepared meal a day, their chances of developing illnesses like hypertension and diabetes will be substantially reduced.

Obviously, when we prepare our own meals we can better control the ingredients. Things like fat, sugar, salt, simple carbohydrates can all be controlled, but when places like fast food restaurants prepare foods, we have no control over the type or amount of ingredients that makeup our meals. Foods that contain high amounts of these common ingredients are said to be the fuel for many diseases including coronary heart condition, diabetes and gastrointestinal disorders.

Here it is, I thought, the art of cooking was going the way of the dodo bird, but I was truly encouraged to learn that people are still buying skillet sets. To me skillet sets is an indication that individuals can better control what they eat and controlling what you eat means that you can better protect your body against many common illnesses.

Now, isn’t that interesting? The things you can learn at the mall. See what you learn the next time you’re there.

You're correct Anna. We need to get back to the days when we prepare our own meals so that we can reconnect with the healing powers of food. Many thanks for the comment.

Can't agree more, but the majority of us leave our meals and what we eat in the hands of others. What a risk!

I think it`s great when people take their eating habits into their own hands! Although, even grocery stores aren`t exactly filled with "normal" foods anymore.

Not many people are cooking their own food these days, Chip; but maybe there is still some hope judging from the guy with the skillets.
