Alabama Immigration Law: Leaving Farmers Holding The Bag And Crops To Die On The Vine
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

The unemployment rate in the United States stands at 9%. In the state of Alabama, the rate is slightly higher, at 9.9%. The politicians and the locals have long blamed joblessness on the foreigners that come to the country illegally and "steal" their jobs: but the harsh, Alabama immigration law that has scared many Hispanics out of the state may paint an entirely different picture of what is going on. As it turns out that many of the jobs that were stolen are not exactly what the people had in mind after all. And, the disappearance of the migrant, Hispanic workers may actually do more harm than good, especially in terms of the farming sector.

Farmers across Alabama as well as in Georgia are complaining that without the undocumented workers, they will never get their crops to market with some already planning dramatic changes to next year's operations. Crops that are not being harvested fast enough are dying on the vines, possibly leading to som bumps in prices at the market. An organic blueberry farm in Georgia will probably abandon the tedious, labor intensive steps it takes to maintain that designation and start using machinery for next growing season. Other farmers are already looking at seriously restricting planting for the next year because they just cannot count on having the workers to harvest the crops.

A tomato farmer in Alabama hired Americans to replace the migrant workers who left the state after the law was passed in June only to find that he could not count on any of them. The new workers worked much more slowly, came in late if they came in at all and were ready to quit for the day by noon. Most worked a single day and then stopped. Part of the reason might be because of a change in attitude about farm work. Experts in the field have pointed out that most Americans walked away from the farming life decades ago and are reluctant to go back. In addition, the low pay might be another factor. A seasoned, expert picker can make roughly $200-300 per day while the American workers are making quite a bit less. For instance, a Hispanic crew of four can pull in as many as three hundred boxes of tomatoes per day, earning each $150. An American crew of 25 pulled in only two hundred boxes, earning each $24.

The news that unemployment insurance is likely to be extended may cause an even slower influx to the farmlands of Alabama and other states. Workers drawing unemployment checks can get as much as $265 per week while a worker who is earning minimum wage at a full time job is getting less than fifty dollars more per week and substantially less at a farming job.
