Birth And Death: An Ole Cowboy\'s Thoughts

How did you arrive here? I know I came to be by birth. What a wondrous word, birth! It brings images of babies and mothers. I know my first experiences as a youth were out in the maternity pens where cows would give birth to baby calves. I would sit on the fence and watch as the new shiny baby calves would arrive. I often tried to imagine what it would be like to be inside that cow. What a gross thought now! But as a little kid, I wondered what it was like inside the womb. I just knew it had to be dark and very wet!

Another not so nice experience I had as a youth was the death of my favorite pet cow. She was a Jersey and I would ride her into the barn to be milked almost every day! One day shortly after she had her baby calf, I came out to get my daily ride. I found her lying motionless on the ground. I tried to rouse her but to no avail. I ran to get my dad. He came out to see. He told me she was dead. I won't go into the gory details, but let's just say I still miss that ole cow!

I have realized that birth and death can describe the movement from one world into the next. For example, I graduated High School and immediately joined the Air Force. Once born into the Air Force life, my high school life was dead. I still have my High School Death certificate! You get the picture here. I moved from one world into the next. No more teachers, exams, or studying for me! My military ID showed proof of my birth into my military career! Oh and I also have my Death certificate from the Air Force, too!

These movements can easily be described as births and deaths. Birth into a particular world usually means death for the place you have left behind. The many 'places' we experience throughout our lives can be celebrated and mourned. It is very similar to the celebratory birth of a baby and the sad passing of a loved one.

The birth of a baby brings much joy and happiness. All kinds of potential and looking forward to the new life ahead. In stark contrast, a death brings sadness and sorrow. Looking back brings forth memories of a life lived.

These births and deaths have made me the person I am today. Let's make what lies ahead memorable for the ones we eventually leave behind. As always, just an ole cowboy's thoughts on life and death!

McK, a nice, thoughtful read here. Thank you. Recently, I was talking of grief with some folks. It's easy to think of people experiencing grief (in all its many forms) when someone dies. But what was highlighted in the discussion is that along with ANY kind of change can come grief. e.g. when a person changes jobs, or when you move to a new town, etc. Thus, what you wrote resonated with me and that discussion I just had. Birth doesn't just have to refer to actual birth, but can be a lovely metaphor for all changes in life . . . just as death can be used as a metaphor. I really enjoyed this writing. Thank you.

Awe! You are very welcome, Penny! I have these stories replayed in my mind and then, POW! Some sort of revelation hits of how it applies to me in other areas of my life. I have experienced many births and deaths in my life. I perceive that you have some strong religious bonds, and hope what I say next is of some comfort. I know two things about this life. First, our birth here into this world is not where we began, and second, death is not a final end. I experienced the birth of our second daughter and the death of my brother within the span of twenty minutes. Not something I would want for anyone, but I learned some great things that day. I learned that our birth into this world meant we said goodbye to a previous existence. And as a person passes on from this life (death), that they are born into the next! Just more musings by an ole cowboy! I am so glad you took the time to read and reflect with me! Hope to see hear from you again soon!

Indeed, you are right:) I'm Lutheran (I say smiling . . . since I jokingly made the statement to you, "you must be Lutheran"). I appreciate your comment here. You take the time to reflect and respond . . . and to share more about yourself. Thank you for your words. I'm off to visit family in Illinois now . . . so I'll be a stranger for a bit of time. Happy writing to you in the meantime!

Very perceptive of you & I'll take that as a compliment. Yes, I am or was a Professional Horse Trainer. A back injury has me sidelined but my strongest desire is to get back to my horses. I trained mine & others horses for horse shows, gave lessons to kids and adults and won more classes than I lost. Traveled the country to the next show and evn learned to gallop race horse. That is the most fun!

Yeah McK, passages are like deaths. Maybe that's why we all tend to be resistant to change. Losing your pet cow sounds very painful. Losing anybody is painful. I think the idea of transition: death to life somewhere else is pretty much the way it is. Interesting article.

Yup, very true it was difficult. I have since learned that with each 'death' we experience a new 'birth'. I suppose our lives depend on how well we learn to adapt to each transition. I learned to accept death and birth early in life. In both the real sense with loved ones and in 'eras' of my life as well. Thanks, Joan! Appreciate the great input!

Thanks! I read about you having a dairy! Awesome! My dad worked on a dairy while I was very young. I bet you can guess why my pet jersey died! Yup milk fever. She was one of the best producers on the little farm. Thanks for the great input, my Greenskeeper friend!
