Generosity Goes A Long Way

Generosity, how many of us actually are and how many of us think we are generous?

I awoke and logged on line today , to find that a world known artist has offered his artwork for free! I was amazed, as this man can command R 100 000-00 for a single painting . He is absolutely incredible. This particular artist has aged well and is comfortable with his achievements in life.

Generosity is apparent, when someone is prepared to give of their time, belongings and talent at no cost or return at all. The world is full of these people. In fact, it almost occurs daily, for me to witness. A common thread between the people that I choose to be with.

Is generosity taught to us? Instilled in us? A need or all three together? I notice too, that generosity is also given by those folk that are very hungry to be wanted and liked.

I have been in circumstances where people have given, not received the gratitude they wanted and then moaned or taken it back. That to me can not be put under the generosity title.

Generosity to me, is when you give, never expecting it back. Pay attention to how it is received. If the gratitude was minimal, maybe just to move on to other pastures, where your generosity may be more warmly received. Not to ever moan, or to take back though.

I pondered over my life the other evening and began to wonder, what the very first form of generosity was that I ever set out to do. I realised that, it was actually in a little village that I lived in, when I was eleven years old. It was a place called West Nicholson, in Rhodesia.

The actual owners of the small town, had a private grave site right next to the Police Station. I made it my duty, to go there every Wednesday after school, clean up the graves, taking weeds and leaves away. Putting fresh, though wild flowers into little tins, saying a prayer and leaving. I did it very discreetly, proudly and never turned to my parents or any other person for credit.

To this day, I do not think that the family are even aware that I attended and looked after their loved ones graves, with such sincerity. The feelings that I had at the time and still to this very day, tell me, that inside of me was a very sweet and caring little girl. That generosity of giving my personal time and never expecting credit, has always given me a very warm wonderful feeling.

Have you ever, in any small way, shown generosity to anyone or anything? If so, how did it make you feel? What were the outcomes that it created in your life? I am sure that we all, have generosity within. Please share yours with me, as I shared my very first one, of my memory with you.

Wow, what a thought provoking article! Hmm, I too did things like you did when you were young. I took care of a vacant lot so all the neighborhood kids had a place to play. I would mow it and set up bases for softball, we had quite a crowd at times. This was back when I was 9 or 10, and it felt wonderful to do it, and like you, I never wanted anything in return, and actually was a bit embarrassed if anyone mentioned my taking care of stuff. Hmm, make ya think.

Great article Ronnie! I try to be as generous as possible, and sometimes it does hurt when not be appreciated but like you said we should continue doing what we do. There are so many different ways we can give back to our families, friends, and communities, not just monetarily too. Thank you for this, it came at the right time!

Ronnie, your comment "the people that I choose to be with" speaks volumes to me. We all have a choice to give positively and to accept only the same in return. Love, friendship, acceptance... so many other positive things too... they are free for any one of us to give. I love the saying "Have an attitude of gratitude".

Ronnie I know of the graves you talk about and I'm sure the family did nothing, so what you did was very charitable... One thing I have to say here is not all people are in the position to give a financial generous offering, and it is not all about money, but a "hello" here and there is as big a charity donation as any other... If people would only greet with a smile and genuine warmth, you would be surprised what a difference it can make in a persons life... I do it here in Pretoria the whole time and you should see the reactions... some think I've lost it and others return the greeting with a smile and sometimes even a laugh.. well if I've cheered someone up I'm happy... we don't know what others are going through and sometimes a greeting or short chat can really cheer them up, and after all what does that cost us? nothing, if anything it probably does us more good than bad.. The odd change here and there I give but only if I'm sure it's for a genuine cause... charity begins at home and we should not forget that fact... Great article Ronnie, I would really like to meet up with you at some stage and talk old times, even try to get into that brilliant head of yours... of course West Nick days would be a big portion of our reunion....
